I agree FannyHill that if people didn't need it for the internet not many people would have it - I was thinking to go with the PO but as I managed to get the £29 connection fee on BT and would have had to pay the full fee with the PO I stuck with BT

I think a rolling contract means it renews automatically every so often unless you tell them you want to stop it

An 18 month ROLLING contract perchance?
    No - http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Notice09_boo/FrameworkImpl337855.htm#FrameworkImpl337855

they will save £122.50 on connection fee with an 18 month contract.
But if you want "free" evening calls then the line rental costs £14.20 per month, not the £11.25 that you would pay on a rolling 12 month contract, and over the 18 month period you would pay an extra £53.10. So in reality you are only saving £69.40.

So if you get an 18 month contract with BT after the 18 months is it renewed automatically for another 18 months ?

    No (again).

You sign up to an 18 month contract. At the end of the 18 months you go onto the "cancel anytime" contract, unless you agree to go onto their rolling 12 month contracts to gain free weekday evening calls.

So you sign for 18 months and then if you want free weekday evening calls you sign for a further 12 months and after 12 months it's renewed automatically for a further 12 months as it's a rolling 12 month contract.

Sounds like your signing your life away to the devil.

I'm so glad I no longer deal with these people.

Hi... this is my first post... been stalking for a while now.

Am in the process of buying a new build and was looking for BT alternatives.

This deal did look appealing, but then i saw this clause......

"Customers must remain on their chosen Calling Plan for 18 months from the date of purchase, and must make at least 30 chargeable or inclusive calls during every three month period, or 10 chargeable calls or inclusive calls per month if you are billed monthly."

I know this equates to only 3 calls a week, however I only have the phone for broadband.... has anyone had any dealings with talk talk? Their connection fee is about £60

    Thanks

Welcome to the MSE forums psoley.

You don't say which provider that is but, in any case, what's the probem? If inclusive (i.e. free) calls qualify, you could just make a series of free calls (e.g. you could phone a few takeaways and apologise that you'd misdialled when they answered).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hi, thanks for the welcome Heinz.....

That was a quote from the BT site.

I understand, it prob would be that easy.... would mean I have to get a phone. The only item I have connected to the line in is the ADSL modem / router. I like the minimalist look :-)

Does anyone know what would happen if you didn't make the 30 calls a month?

    thanks for the reply.

Hi - so I just called up BT and made up that I got a leftlet through the door in regards to the free connection thing. 15min later and hey presto I have a 18month contract @ £11.95.

Little do they know is that in a couple of months time I am going to call them to cancel the line fee and go to Sky....:-) (probbaly ave to pay a termination, oh well).

You get charged the full price. Why not go to Argos - you can pick up a phone there for less than £3.

No, you will have to pay the FULL PRICE of the installation AND the calls plan to which you have agreed.
