Please excuse me as I haven't read the entire thread, but as a new subscriber to BT's services (using the term services loosely here) browsing the forum and I found i'm not the only person they've tried this on with.
Moved into a bungalow which had a BT line with dialtone, but they still charged me the connection fee.
I was naturally furious and spoke to one of the agents on the billing line who just repeated the same thing that this charge is compulsory for the work done to connect me. After five minutes of getting nowhere, I asked to speak to his manager as I did not feel his explanation was satisfactory.
Explained to his manager that if the phone had a dialtone, it was physically connected to the exchange and the only setup required would be the actual account's which would take literally seconds. The £122 charge in no way justifies the work performed and as such I demand the money is credited to my account - 5 minutes on hold and he then agreed the money should be credited back (yay!).
If you have been in this situation, with dialtone before connection I would be tempted to give them a call and demand the fee is refunded. Just ask for the manager (and his managers contact details) if they try and fob you off.
Pretty scandalous that BT have got away with this with so many people, so don't be shy, ring them and get back what is rightfully yours!
Good luck0 -

My husband is moving into rented accommodation near his work that has no phone line and would need broadband. I came across the free sky+box offer and am wondering whether it is best to
a) go for the Free sky+ offer and pay them to connect the phone line (£25) and pay the line rental (£10) as well as whatever TV bundle cost and get broadband and free evening and weekend phone calls
b) Get BT to connect the phone line (free if you take out their phone package for £11.25) and add the TV bundle cost with Sky. I'm unsure as to whether you can do this.
C) or is the alternative to pay BT the £122 and then Sky the bundle cost.
I know there are connection charges for Sky as well, but basically just wanting the Sky+ box, broadband and phone on best possible deal.
Can anyone help?0 -
is it possible to just pay the £125 to get the line back up and running and then have nothing else to do with BT?
I'm thinking of getting the line installed then going with Tiscali (Broadband inc. line rental) But I don't want to enter into any BT contracts0 -

No if you take a BT Phone Line you have to sign up for a 12/18 month contract.
Other companies can fit/reconnect lines themselves. If your sure you want to move to Tiscali , ask them to connect a line.0 -

If you want to go through Tiscali, then ask Tiscali to connect you why you need BT???
Contrary to BT's 122 pounds installation charge, Tiscali's line installation charge will only be 30 quids, plus if you go through QUIDCO you will also get 35 - 45 pounds cashback which pays up your installation charge of 30.0 -
That £30 is just for the dubious privilege of signing up with Tiscali. "A £30 set up fee applies for BT active lines. For non BT or inactive phone lines a £99 line activation fee will apply." - http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/talk/?code=ZZ-NL-11EE&srccode=COD_5920
