BT's free installation offer has been extended until the end of September.
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=22900249#post22900249Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
yep very true, didnt see this thread before i called this morning and was amazed i was able to sign up for the free connection
but now i know its because the offer has been extended and not because im special lol

Hi people, I need some advice since I'm quite new to the BT and stuffs.
I've just moved into my new flat and there are already 2 BT sockets there. I've plugged the phone and there is a dial tone but I cannot make any outgoing call since it will always say the number that I have dialled is not recognised. Probably the line is inactive?
Thus, I logged into BT website and place an order for phone line/reconnection. And later I've received a call from BT that I need to pay 122.50 for the phone line. But I told them that there were already previous tenants here that had used BT broadband and BT phone line. But the BT caller insisted he needs to setup new line for me in the exchange and will send me engineers to set up.
After doing a few online researches (at my friend's place, since I dont have internet to begin with...), I've found that I don't need to pay 122.50 pound if I can hear a dial tone from my home phone. So, I called them regarding the order and tried to insist that there shouldnt be a 122.50 charge to for me to reconnect my line since there is already a line there. But, she (an Indian.. from India?) told me that they have to do some configuration in the exchange and therefore it costs me the standard reconnection charge: 122.50 pound. So, I asked whether the engineer is going to come to my house or not, and she said no. The engineers will only go to the exchange. I asked her why is it so expensive and she replied that there are going to be more than 1 engineers involved (5 peope or something) which will be laying out cables and stuff in the exchange and hence the overwhelming charge.
I just want to know whether is this normal? I'm a student and I am new quite new to this thing and I don't want to be taken advantage over... Thanks!0 -
Hi clafikraz,
Hi there, I will be able to clear this matter up for you. Please let me first explain the installation charge.
When we place an order for a new line provide we will run a line check at the property to see if there is any BT line there. If there is a line available at the property in which we can just take over without the need of an engineer then there will be no connection fee for this.
The connection fee of £122.50 is only applied if an Openreach engineer needs to carry out work to get service. If the line at the property was previously ceased then an engineer will need to go to the exchange and carry out the necessary work there. The engineer does not always need access to the actual property.
In your case this does sound strange as if you have a dial tone then we should of been able to pick up the line there. Can you please PM me your address and any order number you may have been given and I will look into this for you.
I’d also like to explain what happened to the previous answer posted. Another BT person had registered an additional profile as BT Company Representative 2 and tried to help with this post – this was done with good intentions but should not have happened as we are the only presence. UtilityBroker rightly pointed out that any company rep will be highlighted on the official ‘Companies with permission to post’ list and will also have the official signature added when they post please see http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=781221
The MSE team have removed this post and the additional references to it. Sorry for any confusion – we are the only official company presence for BT.
Cheers
Sean

When becoming a new BT customer, at a flat which already has BT line etc from the previous owner, is it possible to get a new number rather than keep theirs??0

i have tried to call up BT to install a line at the new house im moving into, its about a year and a hald old, but not been lived in before (still rented, but the previosu tenants house sale fell through or something) It is a new build, and has BT points in every room of the house. I have called up a couple of times trying to arrang installation, first to be told the order was placed, then when i call to check on progress, it had been cancelled , then i was told that my address was invalid and i had to speak to a speicific team as the address could not be found on the database. So i called up this morning to do this, they said i did not need to speak to a specific team, the line had been tested previously and I needed to pay the £122 connection fee. In no way can i afford this, and also aware that there was a free connection offer floating around, i look, and saw that the offer had been extended on MSE, So i called up again qouting the offer, gave all my details, was told it would be 18months contract etc etc, was told they were running a credit check on me, and then i was cut off.
What do I do? call back and complain that I was cut off. Nothing would have come up on the credit check, other than I was a previous BT customer, and I cancelled my service due to poor customer relations and problems with the boadband (I.e. it stopped connecting out of the blue and they refused to believe me).
I need a phone line, but cannot afford the one off £122, even if they spread it over direct debit. Nor am i in an area where I have other options such as virgin.
any advise?0 -
Hi Strover! I have seen your post and wanted to let you know that you can have a different telephone number to that used by the previous renter of the line
