kimmee - again thank you. You and everyone on this thread sound so much like the people I'd love to have in 'the real world'!
ih8stress - thank you for the ideas, so many more good ones. If there was a 'dating site' to make local friends, I'd be there. I'd much rather have some close friends than a partner, I know that. I'd love to have at least one girly friend who would pop round with a bottle of wine or vice versa for a chat. I don't think I've ever had one
A good friend is the best thing in the world imo - I know what you mean about a 'dating site' for new friends - wouldn't that be fab0 -
B&T - no, I'm not a discounter of older people at all! In fact, when I first started my course the person I was closest too is aorund 20+ years older than me! Although she deserted me too for the younger ones :D
Local churches are a no-goer, the kids and I found a friendly lovely one but it's a good hour+ away (trains and buses.)
We're happy there, but it's very difficult in bad weather, and we aren't part of the 'community'. But it's the nearest thing we felt happy attending.0 -
mumofjusttwo - sounds very similar. You may be surprised if you do get up the courage to ask though...
I'm probably always around too, and always would love to chat. thank you x0 -

don't take this the wrong way, but you could be "deserted" by your fellow students because you have kids. I'm 39 and at college on an access course, and I get asked out all the time to go to things with the kids. There are another couple of girls on my course round about my age and they have kids and obviously it's not so easy for them to go out on a Saturday night without having to make arrangements.
Have you tried Gumtree?
Turn your situation around - how many people are stuck in on a Saturday night with a partner they would not rather be with. You have a whole Saturday night to do with as you wish - watch music on youtube, pamper yourself, read, chat to friends on the internet.
I'm by nature a very solitary person, I live away out in the sticks and to be honest by the time I've been at college for 20 odd hours a week, worked 20 odd hours, finished at 9pm on a Saturday night, I thank god for my situation in that I can come home, put on jammies, open a bottle of nice wine and not have to run about after my clown of an ex!0 -
snowedunder-the problem is I have asked and they are 'busy' may well be telling the truth but not brave enough to ask twice.
Where abouts are you based maybe there are some coffee mornings or book clubs you could go to ?January Grocery 11/3740 -

Great idea! At least we'd all have something in common!0 -
I heard of a thing called meet up - it's a website for making friends. I don't know if that would be good, safe, near you or anything about it.
It is difficult to make decent friends, people who aren't just aquaintances. The best way to do it is to go places that you enjoy & to things you like & aways feel brave about asking someone for a coffee - they can only say no. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.0 -
