I got a Dyson from my other half for my 30th. I wanted to clobber him with it. I never ask for anything. I'm not materialistic either, but that was taking the p! :o

Oh dear. I got my OH some hedge trimmers for his 30th, I thought he would be over the moon :o. He said "when do you want me to start?" :rotfl:

EVERYONE at some time or other has said 'You shouldn't have' or 'Theres no need' when offered a gift! Thats just how some people were brought up!

Personally I prefer to say, "Thank you, that was really kind/it's really thoughtful/I love it!" which are all positive messages - rather than negative 'shouldn't have' or 'no need'

hi helena - yes it would bother me I'd be expecting something lovely for my birthday, not a cheap after thought present. It seems to be more a sign of commitment that you are after anyway. You want to feel valued and loved. I dont think it's greedy to want a little something sparkly on your birthday :)
but you do need to stop being so coy with hi. if its your birthday and he offers to pay for dinner smile and say thank you for gods sake! if he offers to buy you a gift say ooooh how exciting, I cant wait etc. afterall, why would he spend money on something that he doesnt think you want/will appreciate?

how many of us have said no to food then eaten the OH's?

Thats the most annoying thing in the world. Seriously.

I love my girlfriend to bits, but I assume if she says 'I don't want X' then X won't suddenly need to make an appearance in 3 hours time when she was expecting me to know that she wanted it. You're giving him mixed messages, and that's gonna make it twice as hard for him to know what you want.

Have you tried just telling him 'I'd like that...' I think you'll be surprised how much easier it makes things :)

If it bothers you that the pressie never showed up, ask him about it. I'd put money on him having forgotten. Us blokes just aren't as bothered about Birthdays I'm afraid.

it would bother me if my dh did that ,

i still havent forgiven him for buying me heated rollers for my 30th (i have long naturally curly hair) i felt as though he hadnt cared enough to put any thought into the gift .
now i just send him a few pictures of things i like and let him chose something
  • I got my girlfriend PJ's for xmas after not being together long she laughed and asked if it was a hint to cover up at night! NO I didn't know what to get my dad always got my mum PJ's so I copied. Now we give each other ideas and would both be happy to remind the other should we forget.

Ask him I'm sure he wouldn't mind, perhaps he was planning a suprise engagement ring and your lack of enthusiasm put him off. You never know!

Date wife can move to live with me 28/02/2011 (date she can leave work for good)
  • It would bother me if my boyfriend did that however he's that forgetful and absent minded I would have to remind him if I was that bothered.
However, seeing as I got a sieve and knife sharpener for my birthday this year (we both still live at our parents and at his house when I cook it drives me crazy with the lack of normal cooking utensils) to be honest in future I'll be happy to have a card and not something that made me a) cry and b) want to shove the damn things where the sun doesnt shine, but it gives my friend a big laugh whenever she remembers and the one rule I have learnt from it is to drop hints and advise him that on my 22nd birthday a seive was not the best thing to buy just because I complained about the lack of one available once in a while especially when it wasn't even for use in my house.
I know the rules of punctuation and grammer I just choose to ignore them (or forget them half the time)... Apologies in advance

My OH once bought me 25 sacks of garden compost for my birthday - he thought it was what I wanted until I pointed out that if he thought that he was banned in perpetuity from the garden as he clearly thought it was mine and not ours !
