I'm a newbie making one of my first in depth posts. Please forgive me if my message isn't very lucid. The reason I'm posting is because I ran into what I felt was a problem with Hatton Garden Metals and the way they processed my scrap gold.
Yesterday I sent some items to Hatton Garden Metals, 2 full sovereigns, 2 half sovereigns and 22.6g of loose 9carat gold which I assume they received today. Received the money for the items very quickly after this morning's gold fix at about 10:30am, which was great. Unfortunately, I discovered I wasn't paid the price per gram that is stated on the website. Does anyone have any idea why that might be? The site states that anyone sending in their gold will receive the morning's gold price on the day the gold is received.
The price for 9 carat gold listed on their website today is £12.76 per gram, but they paid me £12.65 per gram. That’s a difference of 11 pence per gram. Not a huge amount of money, but I'm left wondering why? If the website says £12.76 per gram, isn't that what I should receive? Perhaps there's some sort of additional charge I'm not aware of.
I've written to them asking for clarification, but sent the e-mail somewhat late in the day, about 4:30 this afternoon. Obviously, I haven't yet received a reply, but hopefully I'll get some sort of answer tomorrow morning.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this or have any thoughts they'd like to share?0 -
Welcome to the forum.
Let us know what they say.
The coins would normally command a premium in the general market because they are currency - did you check if they had any extra "numismatic" value compared to their gold value? Date design and condition are the key factors.

I received a reply from Hatton Garden metal in reply to my query from yesterday. Here it is:
Hi Robert,
I have just tried to call the telephone number that was provided on the account, however I have been informed you are at work.
I have checked your account, and you are correct, we experienced a glitch yesterday where the fix was not picked up by some of the earlier payments that we made, unfortunately yours was one of them. I will be sending over to your account an additional amount of £9.86 that should be received into your account this afternoon. Please accept our apologies for this error, I can assure you that mistakes like this are very rare and this has arisen from a technical error due to the bullion market setting a late fix.
As a gesture of good will the weight has also been increased to your original submission, please note that when items are received here they are cleaned of all dirt that can become embedded, then weighed on fine jewellery scales that are legally calibrated by trading standards.
Please ignore the emails that you will shortly receive with regards to a ‘New Submission’ this will state 1g of 9ct, however the amount payable will be for the £9.86 as stated above.
Again, please accept our apologies for this error, and if there is anything further that I can help you with then please be in touch.
Kind Regards,
Zoe

So, all in all a good result, and a big thank you to Zoe at Hatton for setting things right.:T:rotfl:0 -
- When did you use it:posted yesterday, money already in my account at 2:30pm
- What did you send it: 33g of 9ct, 5g of 18ct and 3g of unknown ct (but thought it was probably brass)
- How much did it promise you: £517
- How much did it deliver:£508
- How efficient was the service: lightening
- If it didn't deliver the full amount, what was its reason:
- I had to take account of the unknown metal (it was brass) I submitted on the form, which bumped the price up on the initial estimate, + some of the non-precious stones in the rings increased the weight.
- Anything else other people should know........
Also I submitted an online query to HGM Monday to ask about an item and received a response seven minutes later.
Astonishing.
Very pleased."carpe that diem"0 -
Thanks for your post Steel - I didn't think about them closing so early for xmas.
I posted my gold off to them on the 22nd and was wondering why things hadn't proceeded as quickly as they usually do. My gold is waiting in their PO box waiting to be signed for according to Royal Mail. So not in time for xmas but at least it will be a good start to the New Year0
