    One like this?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BUCHE-GIROD-LADIES-9CT-GOLD-WRISTWATCH-VINTAGE-IS-/300582876192

[Mind you just because some chancer asks for fancy prices, it does not mean he is likely to get them]

    Hi. This was helpful.

It's a Bueche Girod mens watch. Working mechanism. Weighs c60g with c48g being gold.

I suppose what I need to know is if I'm likely to get more than £550 for the watch (rather than just selling for the gold). If so, any recommendations on where to sell.

In answer to the question about whether to hang on, it's just a case of wondering what gold prices will do.

Do Hatton Garden buy silver? I can't see anything on their website that they do - although they refer to advice about silver.

If they don't, any recommendations on where to sell?

They certainly did some 18 months ago.

I used some scrap bits of silver to make up the weight of my parcel to the Post Office charge level (ie the gold paid for the stamp and the silver got a free ride).

Send them an email and ask?

Perhaps the recent volatility in precious metal prices has made them more cautious of quoting days in advance of probable receipt?

I had the same problem as an executor with a gents mass produced 14 ct Swiss movement circa 1955. In the end the beneficiaries agree to let my son have it for its gold value. One of these days I might see him wearing it.:D

I suppose it really is matter of how quickly you need the cash, as the market in collectibles is a high margin business. It takes time to find an end use buyer (as against a trader).

You could try phoning round the auction houses/dealers and see if anyone thinks it is worth more than its gold value. They have special sales from time to time, with a theme like "timepieces". If you get a flicker of interest you can always email some photos.
[I found it interesting discovering the "history" of the watch I found in the Edwardian desk]

As it is only 9ct (ie more base metal than gold) I would doubt it has much intrinsic value over the metal price unless there is something "special" about the appearance or the design of the movement.

One last though, back in the 1930's the American government deliberately bankrupted some gold speculators, as part of the market manipulation to get the New Deal economy moving again.

  • Hi

I am new to this forum and have no connection with Hatton Garden Metals. I live on Teesside and 6 weeks ago sold some gold at a local jewellers who gave me a reasonable price for some old rings, I had tried various dealers on Teesside and the price variations were ridiculous, in fact the dealer I sold to gave me £50 more than their other branch in Middlesbrough. My wife had some more jewelery she wanted to sell and I decided to try Hatton Gardens after seeing the postings here. Before doing so I phoned some local dealers and asked for the price they were paying per per gram the highest being Ramsdens who quoted me £9.00 per gram.

To cut a long story short I posted 30 grams gold to Hatton Gardens yesterday by recorded delivery and got £12.25 per gram, money is already in Bank and they said I had sent 31.25 grams, great result and a very pleasant way to do business
  • When did you use it- 12th October 2011

How much did it promise you- 3grams was not gold but I am happy with the received amount
    How much did it deliver-£493.29
How efficient was the service- Extremely
If it didn't deliver the full amount, what was its reason- Some was not gold
Anything else other people should know- Use this company, I went to my local gold dealer who provides the best high street prices, he offered me £11 per gram. Instead I took the extra time to use Hatton Garden Metals and received at least £50 more.

How much are people paying for special delivery?
  • (I did a fair bit of research online, each time finding what looked to be good deal on prices of gold, then finding reviews saying the companies way of dealing with the gold is lengthly, or hassel trying to get the gold back if the quote wasnt as good, and most of all the price quoted to the price given considerably less)
    However...
I came across this thread, and wanted to also leave my good feedback for this company - easy to use, excellent fast customer service, gives you the price they quote on there website daily, payment into your bank the same day as they receive the gold.
    Definitely deserve the recognition.
    Excellent service.
    Thank you.
