I have used HGM about 5 times and they are generally reliable and quick payers but they are poor at responding to email queries.

I find that if you over-estimate the weight of your gold due to using kitchen scales instead of accurate jewellery scales, they will correct you and explain why.

However, if you fill in the form incorrectly & underweigh the gold, they will not correct you. I filled in the online form and printed it out and then added 12g gold watch (without the metal/plastic parts) and didn't correct the form. My loss, as they did not take the extra 12g into account. Despite several emails, they did not look into it. "Gary" said he was away from the office and would check when he got back. He didn't (if Gary even exists?), and surely there would be other staff who could have done the investigating?

What's to stop them saying that you didn't send in what you had stated? Trust and reputation is very important. However, compared to Cash4Gold, HGM are much much better. I sent in 10g of gold and some scrap silver to Cash4Gold and got less than £25 back!

Hi, I am a genuine person and have just posted a comment about HGM which I think is fair. Generally good and speedy service but unreliable at responding to emails. Also, they once paid me only for what weight was on my form but not the 12g I added after printing out the form. My word against theirs I suppose. They said they would look into it but never did. This makes me wary of them now. But overall, compared to Cash4Gold and other postal gold services, their prices are the best

I've just used HGM and can say that I'm happy with their service and that they pay out much more than the high street for hallmarked gold. I spent hours reading the posts here and they helped me decide if I should use them so I'm returning the favour for anyone else looking for feedback on HGM. My advice for anyone considering using them is as follows:
    • Get your jewellery valued in person on the high street (unless you are sure from the hallmarks what type and weight it is) before you send it off. They should be able to weigh it for you too if you don't have scales that measure decimal points of grams. You'll also know how much insurance cover you should pay for them with the Special Delivery. As my items were worth over £500 I paid a little extra for the cover of up to £1000. I photographed the written quote next to the pieces I was sending just so I'd have some evidence if things went awry.
    • Don't send off unmarked jewellery if you think it may be valuable and you're of a nervous disposition. I didn't have any problems as they returned the items they thought were non gold but they did forget to take the return postage off my payout so I had to phone them to resolve the situation. It was a bit of a nervous wait (I started to think that I'd been greedy wanting top price and that it would backfire on me _pale_) but my items got back to me a couple of days later after a few phone calls with just the minor marks where they had tested them. My high street jeweller was happy to take my non-marked items once they were returned as they had acid tested them before I'd sent them to HGM and found them to be at least 18k.
    • I did ask for email confirmation of my payment for the return postage and that they had been dispatched but I didn't receive this. I would advise you not to rely on email contact from HGM other than for notification that they have paid out to you. I will say however that they answered the phone promptly each time I called (3 times in all) and the lady on the other end was polite and helpful. So phone, don't email if you have a query.
I hope this has been of use to someone. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I would definitely use HGM again for hallmarked jewellery. :)
  • Just to make clear that I mean not hallmarked when I refer to un-marked jewellery in my post above. I did not mean to infer it doesn't have any scuffs or dents from wear and tear. :o

Have used HGM a couple of times now and have been really pleased with their service. Paid out exactly what was quoted for the days price for the exact amount of gold that I sent, ( marked and unmarked).Items sent on Monday by SD, money in my bank Tuesday Afternoon. Don't think you could ask for a better service.

Big thank you - posted gold to HGM (after reading reviews on MSE) at 14.24 on Tuesday and cash was in my account by 13.00 Wednesday! Excellent service. My weight was .10g out and the gold price had increased by 5p by the time it was processed, so for 39.10g of 9ct I received £343.07.

This was £96 more than I had been quoted in a shop in town! Very happy.:j
  • When did you use it
    10 August 2010
    What did you send it
    16:35 10 August 2010
How much did it promise you
    £42.06
    How much did it deliver
    £37.80
    How efficient was the service
Very efficient. An incredibly smooth transaction. I received confirmation at 13:02 on 11 August and the money was available in my account by 15:15 on the same day. Fantastic!
If it didn't deliver the full amount, what was its reason
Due to stones in the jewellery. I was made fully aware of this by reading up on it on their website.
Anything else other people should know
Be realistic about what you'll receive if your jewellery does have stones in them.
