Perhaps HGM situated in the London jewellery district really can make a profit out of high turnover and thin margins?
Exactly!! Many of the HGM posts are from newbies who have never posted before and therefore could be spammers, so BUYER BEWARE
I have also asked Jenny via email to contact me regarding our own gold thread
As to your 2 questions re the watch, the gold bits will be the back plate and casing, but check inside the casing that there isn't a brass/metal insert...
Re the nib its prob about 0.6 gram of gold if it has 14k/18k written on it If it has RG or RGP etc then its plated0 -
- When did you use it - Today
- What did you send it - 45g gold chain
- How much did it promise you - £375
- How much did it deliver - £372
- How efficient was the service - Extremely
- If it didn't deliver the full amount, what was its reason - Slight difference in weight
- Anything else other people should know - Not really
Found it in January, sent it back to the retailer to get repaired, but they said it was in a bad state, so could do nothing.
Sent it by Special Delivery to Hatton Garden Metals on Friday and by noon today, I had £372 in my bank account, so I'm extremely happy.:D0 -
Thanks to everyone for their honest feedback about HGM. I wouldn't have dreamed of using a postal company if it hadn't of been for you lot after all the bad press about them in general (instead I probably would have got ripped off on the high street).
- When did you use it - Yesterday
- What did you send it - Approx 17 grams 9crt gold.
- How much did it promise you - 17 grams £144.??
- How much did it deliver - £136.53
- How efficient was the service - I'm really impressed
- If it didn't deliver the full amount, what was its reason - Weighed in at 16.02 due to couple of non gold earings, which I don't disbelieve because I wasn't 100% sure if a couple were gold plus I was using kitchen scales.
- Anything else other people should know - They e-mailed me this morning to advise the amount had been paid by Bacs and it's already in my account.

But I seem to recall you saying that you don't offer a postal service. Chances are bumblesquat (and many others) don't live local to wherever you are.
If you only offer a "walk in" service, then you're probably better off advertising local to where you are, as that's your target market.0 -

EXACTLY We dont compete with HGm but we cover the NW of England and serve over 3 million people. We don't do postal gold and we dont trust it for the many reasons outlined above BUT we are honest and trustworthy.0 -
As a newbie but a retired bullion dealer I find myself agreeing with a lot of what emma200861 has to say
Most of the public don't know what carat their gold is . If a hypothetical customer sends 100 grams of what they believe to be 9 carat gold HGM would pay say, £835.
But if the customer made an error and 25 grams of it was 18 carat HGM should have paid (75 x £8.35 for the 9ct and 25x £16.70 for the 18ct) £1043.50.
25 grams of 18ct =50grams of 9 carat in value terms so in fact the customer had the 9ct equivalent of (75+50) 125 grams 0f 9ct HGM would have paid at (£835/125g) £6.68.not a great rate!!
HGM sound an honest company but at their margins IMO they would have to rely on these mistakes to make a profit
It would be far better for each and every customer to find a local company that pays a similar rate (and yes Emma's right they do exist.. I can name half a dozen!) and face to face ask them to check each carat. before selling either face to face or before posting off
Lets be clear here. To solely rely on the honesty of a company to sort out your gold for you by post is just not sensible. Face to face you can even demand to use the buyers eye-glass to see for yourself what carat a ring is etc, and never underestimate the scale of the problem. One piece of jewellery in five has an unreadable/damaged/worn or even missing hallmark...I rest my case!!0 -

That is the purpose of this thread! For those of us who have used HGM to give feedback. good or bad, which can be viewed by anyone considering using their services.
You've made your point, you obviously don't like them and wouldn't/don't need to use them. Fine. I sold my gold pre xmas. I'm in NW - I couldn't find any other goldie who would give me as much dough for my gold. Am not (that) stupid that I wouldn't check the carot of my gold before posting; I got slightly more than quoted but I'd have come to you if I'd known where you were! as it is I was more than happy with HGM. Most of the public that I know were going to their local market town and selling to a prefab type hut - not v mse! If I hadn't been on this site I wouldn't have known about HGM I'd have used a postal service off the telly or the local market but because I try to be a bit savvy I checked up first and glad I did.
