I sent off some gold and silver yesterday. Today when I got home from work had an email to say that they had paid me £302.51 which I was very pleased about. They said in the email that I had not been paid for a non gold working watch that I had sent in. It was an old watch that had 9ct premo written on it that I thought meant it was 9 ct gold. I opted for them not to return non-gold items but I have changed my mind and would like them to send me the watch back. Has anyone had a similar thing happen? Will they return it to me?

    TIA

Just to let you all know, I emailed HGM last night to say that I would like the watch and other non-gold items and this is their reply:

Its all part of the service - the non gold items will be returned and can be sent on wednesday. You do not need to send us the money for the return we will get them back to you so that you are 100% satisfied.

These will be sent special delivery and will require a signature on delivery

We hope this helps and we hope you were happy with the service.

I'm really pleased and to any of you who are hesitating about sending your gold/silver off to this company I would say go for it, they provide a first class service.

  • I 've used this service twice now and have found it excellent. They put the cheque in the post, first class, the same day they received the gold. The price for selling Sovereign coins was 50% better from them than the two places I tried in Manchester city centre. The best price for scrap locally was £6 today when their website was offering £8.69

I'm another first-time gold seller, had been quoted some poor prices in various local jewellers (the best offer actually came from a pawn shop), didn't trust the postal gold sites after seeing the review on the One Show, but finally plumped for Hatton Garden Metals since I'd seen a lot of positive reviews on-line.

Was rather nervous sticking some sovereigns in the post but could insure them through Special Delivery and track them on-line - posted the coins yesterday lunchtime for delivery before 1pm today and the money's already in my account! The prices listed on their web page were the ones used (after this morning's gold fix which which can be checked independently).

Very relieved and got 25% more dosh than my best local quote (even after deducting special delivery & insurance) - highly recommended!

When did you use it - 04/03/10
What did you send it - Gold sovereigns and half sovereigns
How much did it promise you - nothing quoted, but from website daily prices was expecting £1180ish
How much did it deliver - £1189.75
How efficient was the service - Extremely
If it didn't deliver the full amount, what was its reason -
Anything else other people should know -

I agree with all the postive comments, a personal call from Gary to clarify the weight of the gold I sent was over and above what I had expected. So A1 for customer service and communication and A1 for top prices paid.
  • Quotation on the 1st on the internet, sent the gold on the 2nd, received confirmation email of price on the 3rd and money in the bank account - all by the 5 March 2010. Fantastic service. Would highly recommend

Lets dispel a myth once and for all here I'll talk you through the maths PRICE PER GRAM IS NOT THE BE ALL AND END ALL

You are attracted by a high postal gold price. Notwithstanding the fact you then post your gold off and are not insured (Well OK the Post Office wont pay out if your items go missing IF you don't have receipts) HGM et al get their hands on your gold

You sent them 100 grams right and are expecting £850 ie £8.50 a gram
However you had some stones in your gold so they deduct, not the actual stone weight but a weight that includes a cost for their labour to get the stones out

Suppose the actual stone weight is 1 gram, they will deduct 2 or 3 grams. That then affects the wonderful price per gram that they offered you ...Instead of getting 8.50 a gram, in truth you are losing £17 from the price you were expecting ...So for your 100 grams you will now be getting £834 ie £8.33 a gram.

Then they under-weigh your items by 1-2 grams (see above) So lets take another £17 off the price (ie 2 grams...Keep UP) That leaves you with £817 (£8.17 a gram)

Then there is your postal cost Lets say £6.... That takes the price down to £811 (ie £8.11 a gram)

But hang on here. You made a mistake. After all you are just a customer not a gold expert. One of the bracelets you posted off as 9 carat, weighing 10 grams was actually 18 carat and an honest face to face company would have told you this (I would and no you cant have my company name I would only get thrown off here!!!!) so you lose 10 grams x £8(the difference between 9 and 18 carat)£80 Take that off your balance of £811 and you get £731 ie £7.31 a gram

I run a gold buying business.(AND THIS IS NOT SPAM, NO COMPANY NAME/NO BUSINESS BEING TOUTED).I've been in the trade 20 years. I don't do postal gold because its irresponsible to ask customers to post their gold when they aren't insured. We pay £8.30 a gram. But we don't get business because of the publicity on this website. But one thing is clear we don't practice sleight of hand as outlined above So customer beware and MSE stop running ads for postal gold companies.

Welcome back after all you're posts got removed this morning.
You're posts will stay as long as you don't try and promote you're own company.

I suspect there are as many "dodgy" real life jewellers that wouldn't tell you the real price as there are internet ones that do the same. I applaud you for being honest with you're customers.

But the point is that face to face a customer can check the weight of gold and the weight of stones taken out etc. They can see exactly what is going on

Was very wary of using any of the companies advertised on TV. Sought recommendations from Money Saving Expert, and opted for Hatton Garden Metals. HGM's has a calculator on its site so you have an idea of how much all your gold is worth, instead of sending it off and receiving some paultry sum back. They also have the current market prices for gold, silver etc on their site as well! Site is very informative! Sent my gold (130g on my scales) off on 25/2/10 by special delivery (£6.25 for insured of £1,000 - HGM doen't send you an envelope for free postage, so you get more cash for your gold). Got my email from HGM today (26/2/10) at 11.25 am telling me that they had knocked off 5g for the weight of the stones that were in the jewellery (I opted not to have them returned to me because that costs an extra £6.50) just over £1,000 had been paid into my account - I checked and it had - brilliant service! Would most definitely use them again!

5 grams off for stones!!! What were they?? Rocks!! (5 gm is a heavyish wedding ring) Thats over £40 lost on £1000 for a start So that initial attractive lure of a high gold price turns out to be not so good after all .... lets suppose the price was £8.50 a gram and the customer had 100 grams ie £850.Then the 5g stones get taken out and the customer now gets (95g x 8.5 =£807.5) On her original 100 grams thats £8.07 a gram...You see not such a good price after all Then of course the unsuspecting customer might have had some 18carat she had placed in the 9 carat etc say another £40 lost (so now the price is £767 for her 100 grams ie £7.67 a gram and so on ) .........
These little deductions bring the price per gram down, because no company can operate on a profit at 97% of bullion without sleight of hand. Our approach is to work on 93% of bullion but without the tricks !!
But as i said earlier MSE seems very keen to advertise postal gold companies over local bullion dealers, to our detriment of course...
