I am going to weigh all my old jewellery this week.

I have sorted through it before with the idea of taking it to one of the local jewellers. Fortunately for me I rarely go into town so havent been yet as I think I'l get a better deal from HGM.

Anyway, I have some old rings, some with stones (small blue topaz, smoky quartz) so should I take the stones out before I weigh and send it off?
I'm assuming the weight of these wont count and it appears the stones arent wanted by the gold companies?

Have just used HGM, after doing some research into them on this site, some interesting comments and opinions, anyway, my wife and I had a whole stack of broken jewellery, odd earings, bent up bangles and the like, couple of intact things, my old wedding ring and a couple of out of fashion chains that haven't been worn for years. So we weighed them at 100gms on our kitchen scales.
Visited the site it was valued at just over £800, so followed the instructions got an email from them to print off and sign.
Sent off yesterday (Thursday) by special delivery (Cost £6.25, got it insured for up to £1000).
Email arrived in my inbox this morning saying weight was 110.6 gms at a rate of £8.38 per gm, total paid £926.83.
Checked my bank account and there was the money, brilliant!

It's more than paid for our new TV that we had to buy when the old one blew up so we're really happy, I'm sure if we'd sold some of the items seperately (as someone has suggested here) we may have got a bit more, but sometimes it's just load of hassle and this was very very easy.

Yes that is right - this is a sort it by gold content, weigh it, smash it up and feed it into the furnace operation.

Presumably none of the gems are valuable?

  • Was very wary of using any of the companies advertised on TV. Sought recommendations from Money Saving Expert, and opted for Hatton Garden Metals. HGM's has a calculator on its site so you have an idea of how much all your gold is worth, instead of sending it off and receiving some paultry sum back. They also have the current market prices for gold, silver etc on their site as well! Site is very informative! Sent my gold (130g on my scales) off on 25/2/10 by special delivery (£6.25 for insured of £1,000 - HGM doen't send you an envelope for free postage, so you get more cash for your gold). Got my email from HGM today (26/2/10) at 11.25 am telling me that they had knocked off 5g for the weight of the stones that were in the jewellery (I opted not to have them returned to me because that costs an extra £6.50) just over £1,000 had been paid into my account - I checked and it had - brilliant service! Would most definitely use them again!

  • Sent off 172 grams worth of scrap 9ct gold yesterday by special delivery (which cost about £7) - got the money today in my bank account at £8.38 per gram.

When I sent the stuff off yesterday, the price was lower, but they used today's increased price when paying me. Very happy with the service.

They give you an online order form to fill out with the details of grams and what carat the gold is, then they give you sign in details so you can track the order progress.

They send you an email which you should print and enclose with the gold, but if you don't have a working printer, you can write the reference number on paper and send it with it.

The only problem was waiting 30 minutes to send it by special delivery. If only Hatton Garden Metal ran the Post Office, they would be equally efficient!

Can't recommend these guys more highly. This is the way all business should be.

Don't think for a second about sending your scrap gold to anywhere else. These guys are pros.

I got together with a work colleague and my Mum and we finally sent off our old broken gold jewellery to HGM yesterday. (Registered on their website as 3 different accounts and put the gold in separate bags but all together in the one envelope to save postage). Cost £4.95 special delivery. Checked the royal mail website today and it was delivered first thing. Looked in my bank account and the money was there by 11.50 a.m.
Was a bit disappointed that their weight was less than what I weighed the gold as. I bought some jewellery scales before christmas which cost me £20. These came with a free 50g weight to check for accuracy. I weighed my gold as 14.4g and my Mum's gold as 5.9g. However, HGM weighed them as 14g and 5.5g respectively (both 0.4g under). I figured that my scales must be out by 0.4g and waited to hear from my colleague whose gold I'd also weighed on my scales. She'd only sent 2 items, one which was 9ct and the other 14ct. I'd weighed her items as 2.3g and 2.9g respectively. HGM weighed them as 2.2g and 2.7g respectively. I was a bit miffed that hers weren't both 0.4g under!
Still, the service was rapid and the price was quite good at £8.38 per gram for 9ct (higher than yesterday's price of £8.21 per gram).

Sent off my gold yesterday - today £250 in my bank account. Very impressed with the speed of service and comms. However, be careful when stating the carat of gold. When I was sorting through my gold last night to send more off I noticed my 18ct wedding ring had been put in the previous parcel - and was not picked up. I know its only a few pounds but just something to be aware of.

However, I will use them again for sure.
