Can anyone tell me if I had have been caught by the police who would have been at fault here, me or my employer???
Presumably the car is registered to your employer? If so they are liable for taxing it.0 -

You were unable to have it legally on the road until the disc arrived and was on display, what if you had needed to drive it somewhere? Couldn't you get to a P.O.? I'm assuming you're on about Sun 1st Nov 090 -
Q665: I have ordered my tax disc on line but it will not arrive before the end of the month, can I drive my car before it comes?
If you choose to drive your vehicle on a road without displaying a valid tax disc then you commit an offence and risk getting fined.
However there is an exemption for the first 5 working days of the month from displaying a valid tax disc. The exemption will only apply in the month when the tax disc commences and where an application for a new tax disc has been made before the old one expires. Drivers should continue to display the previous tax disc until the new one arrives. After 5 days the offence will be committed if the new tax disc is not displayed
Purchasing a tax disc on line can take up to 5 days so make sure you do it in plenty of time.

Still doesn't prove your point though. I'm on the fence on this one, but it appears so far that police should not be issuing FPNs for no VED on display when the car is unattended.
The reason I highlighted the bit in blue is just to say that the relevant section of the RTA or VERA (I forget which one gives 5 days grace) says nothing about having to continue to display the old -expired- disc.0 -

You are allowed 5 days grace. If caught after this time both would be liable. You for using, your employer for causing and permitting!0 -

If used in connection with the employers business they are also using too.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
If I was going away at the same time as my tax disc was due I would go to a post office and buy one to make sure.

Thanks for the clarification everyone, yes it is my employer that is responsible for taxing the car not me as they hold the registration document, I just drive it!
What is most annoying is that I am still expected to do my job (as in drive around the country meeting clients) even though they can't pull their finger out and get the tax done in time! They wouldn't even post the tax disc to me, I had to drive into the office to collect it.Aug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -

You only need one.;)
i understand what he means, my local post office which i use regularly for posting things don't do road tax.
but my main post office do,but if i want to get it from there i need to wait in line for half an hour for someone to then scrutinise my insurance details then issue my disc.
i'll pay online and leave the post office que for the undesirables taking the tax back out of the system....work permit granted!0
