TAX Disk didnt arrive, Fixed Penalty Notice!

I declared SORN on 28 October and received the confirnmation through the post on 3 November, 4 working days. I find this to be typical for correspondence from the DVLA. Perhaps I get special treatment?;) Postal strikes certainly don't seem to have affected them.0

i bought and paid for my tax disk online 5 days before it was due to expire. I put the email confirmation in my window just incase it didnt arrive within the 5 days.
went on holiday with strict instructions for my housemate to put the disk in the window once it arrived.
i get back 3 weeks later and there had been no tax disk in the post (i assumed it was because of the postal strike). so i rang the dvla and requested a duplicate. im awaiting it to arrive i the next 2 or 3 days.
Were there postal stikes in the first half of October?0 -
I had a similar experience in the past, if you report a disc as not arrived they'll send a replacement apparently by special delivery...mine didnt turn up either, so if you have to request a second time that they send a new one they'll tell you to go to the nearest DVLA office to collect it, no charge though if it's due to it not turning up through the post. It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

If I was going away at the same time as my tax disc was due I would go to a post office and buy one to make sure.
Post Offices are still quite common.0 -
You need to be a little careful too...my hubby had to get a replacement tax disk the other day (he lost it in between it turning up and putting it in the car, !!!!!!!!) and the ONLY way they would do it was for him to go in person to the local DVLA office, fill out a replacement form and pay a £7 fee.....They wouldn't post it to him. Are you SURE they are posting yours?
There is no fee to pay if the disc has got lost in the post.
They seem to have discriminated against your husband as applying to replace a lost disc via the post is the norm, (though you can go in person if you want to).0 -

I got mine through the post and then promptly lost it.I HAD (no choice) to go to the nearest DVLA office (50 mile round trip) and get a replacement in person. This was maybe 3 years ago now so I can't remember what the reason was that they gave for having to go in person.

Failing to display a vehicle excise licence ceased being an offence dealt with by Police years ago so I am at a loss to understand why you received a FPT (unless perhaps you live in Scotland which has a different legal system). I am currently sat reading my Aide memoire for issuing FPT's and it clearly states "when an excise licence is expired or not present proceed by CLe/2". (CLE/2 is a form to forward to DVLA who have responsibility for issuing fines now).
I suggest you contact the ticket office for your local police force and enquire re the legality of the ticket.0 -
The website tells you a time frame in which to contact them if the disc does not arrive. This time frame is certainly not as long as a month. I'd pay up, sorry to say. If having paid was a legal defence to "failing to display" they would not have issued the ticket.0

Why advise someone to pay up when the offence is not one that can be dealt with by the Police any more?
As I said to the poster the best thing to do is contact the Police Ticket Office for the issuing force and establish why the ticket has been issued.0 -
i had not received my tax disk due to an error in the post or the tax people. is it my fault i didnt receive it? why would i buy a tax disk and make a concious decision to not display it?
You have entirely missed the point, haven't you?
It matters not whos fault it was, nor whether you bought & paid for the tax disc.
In your own words, the offence was:failing to display. ..."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
