You have just had your lightbulb moment and the only way is up from now on.

Listen to what people are saying on here. They are the voice of experience and there are many people who have been in your situation on this board.

Talk to your parents. You won't even have to open your mouth, just sit down with them and show them the letters you have been getting. It will explain itself. I'm sure they will do anything to help you.

Once you have sorted out your health and payplan you can look at other ways of reducing your debt. I assuming you will have something to show for this debt (car/clothes/dvds etc) and you could sell them to help pay off the bills.

Just take it a day at a time and let us know how it is going.

    Good luck xxx

    Some great advice already mentioned.

You just need to be honest and up front with your parents let them know what situation your in and i'm sure they can allow you not to pay rent for a few months...??

Definately call pay plan or cccs they will help you, and you will kick yourself for not doing it earlier.

I'm just wondering how amex let you get so much into debt?

As so many have said it is only money & your health is far more important.
I think you should strongly consider bankrupcy as you dont own a house.
Please contact either CAB, or Payplan or CCCS to see what they advise you.

I think bankruptcy is the right option with a debt of 83k and one of the charitable orgs may well advise this. Its not supposed to be an easy way out but if its got you down to that extent its the right way and it doesn't last forever.

I am really scared to declare bankruptcy, with court visits and such..
I work for the CAB and try to accompany my clients to court when they hand their forms in. It's really not as frightening as it sounds. We sit in a little room with a court clark (charming lady in her late 50s) and go through the form, just to check it's complete. We hand over the dosh, in cash (£325 OR fee plus £150 court fee). Then the client swers on the bible.

Then we have a coffee in the cafe while the paperwork is prepared, go back half an hour later and collect the bankruptcy certificate. All debts now written off!

The cllient goes home and the Oficial Receiver phones later that day. Everything else happens by phone and post.

Not all courts work exactly like this and not all CABs can afford for their staff to do what i do.

But I just wanted to let you know that it's not scary, it's really rather routine for everyone involved.

Ok I didnt owe as much as you but I did owe £17.5k with no way what so ever of paying it, I had left my husband and my partner walked out on me. I, like a lot of others buried my head in the sand and because of embarrasment I didnt talk to any one about it (my parents still dont know how much I DID owe). I saw a debt advisor but I had no spare money to pay. In the end I did the only thing that I thought would help - I declared myself bankrupt. It was the best thing that I ever did. I did this 6th April 2004. I am now debt free and able to live my life again.
I was terrified but it was nothing, I filled the forms in, paid the fee and had to go in front of a judge who decided if I could be declared bankrupt or not. He said yes then I went home. I received a phone call later that day from the official receivers checking the details on the forms I had filled in and they said they would phone back at a later date but I would receive a letter saying when this would be.
There is a notice put in the London Gazette and your local paper saying that you are declaring yourself bankrupt but it DOES NOT say how much you owe.
The look at your pay (if you work), what you pay out (bills etc) and see if you can pay anything back.
Your bank accounts and credit cards are froze (so do what I did and open a cash card account before you go bankrupt and have your wages paid in there, this is the only type of account that you can have if you are bankrupt) so it stops you from spending what you dont have.
You are bankrupt for 12months but this still shows on your credit history for 6 years.
I worried my self sick and spent weeks crying and thinking that everyone would be better off if I was dead but this has been a life line to me.
I have no debt at all now and even have a little bit in savings which I have never had in my life.
There certinley was light at the end of my tunnel and hope this will help anyone out there who is thinking of going down the bankrupcy route.

Hey there. I got to let you know that you have support here.

As many people on here say "They can't have what you haven't got" and you and your health are far far far too important to do anything rash.

Do not become a tragic statistic my darling.

Collect your courage and make the calls you need to make to get the ball rolling. You are not the first and you are not the last, and you are far from the "worst" as well.

It no doubt feels like an insurmountable challenge ahead. But you can get through this and live a better life in the future.

My best wishes and thoughts are with you. Keep coming back to the site and talk to us.
