Hello,
For over a year I have been severly depressed. Several factors have contributed none more so than my financial situation. At the moment I owe:
Money Owed
EGG Loan £16,581.43
Barclaycard M/C £15,056.83
Barclaycard VISA £12,812.92
Amex 1 £8,823.91
Amex 2 £8,687.89
Amex 3 £4,199.34
Amex 4 £3,199.87
HSBC Card £2,212.31
Harrods £2,092.53
John Lewis £1,869.47
Burton £1,701.69
Barclays O/D £1,611.63
HFC (Hilton) £1,416.69
Capital One £1,234.96
HSBS O/D £1,140.39
Selfridges £785.97
EGG Card £449.99
Barclays O/D 2 £120.00
TOTAL £83,997.82
I have had to leave my job last month as it was getting too much and have been offered a job getting 1,400 after tax per month. I am already so behind in payments that I have been passed onto debt collection agencys (in the case of Egg, 4 different comapnies) and in the case of Amex they have contacted lawyers.
I have sent them all so many letters it has no effect, all I get are standard computerised letters back, no one is helping me. I reached the end of my tether on Friday and am now seriously thinking about ending it all.
I rent a room from my parents for about £500 per month, £200 on bills including food per month, sped about £50 on clothes (go through a lot of trousers), £150 on monthly travelcard, £100 on cigarettes per month.
Spending is £1000 per month leaving £400 left over. As you can see I have no social life, have stopped talking to my friends and now sit in my room all day crying and not knowing what to do.
If you wish to judge me then that is fine but please do not pass judgement on me in this thread.
I am thinking of doing a IVA but would £400 be enough per month.
PLEASE HELP.

Listen - firstly dont panic - there are many people on this board who can help you. Organisations like payplan, CAB etc offer brilliant advice and can and will help you.
Perhaps if you can break down your spending as well - we could have a look and see if you could possibly save any money.
Stay strong. Posting on the board is the first (and often hardiest) step but it will get easier - and we will all help0 -
Judge you no. Slap you yes only you can snap yourself out of this. You need to stop sit down and work things out. You have choices to make however hard it seems their is light at the end of the tunnel (no its not a train). Your true friends will back you and the others dont matter anyway.
If you have nothing and it wont effect your job bankruptsy may be an option, suicide is not!Barclaycard 3800

Please, Please, Please don't even think that way. You life is worth a lot more than any money you owe.
Do you parents know about how much you owe and how unhappy you are. Could your parents reduce the amount you pay to them. As you are paying out £700 a month for a room and food.
One of first things you need to do is
1) talk to your parents
2) talk to payplan http://www.payplan.com/or ccsc http://www.cccs.co.uk/
They are there to help.
And the third bigger is to see a Dr. You need to talk someone outside of the problem.
As I said at the start of this post. Your life and you as a person is worth so much more than money.
I know it is not a nice idea but if does not effect your job then I think you should consider going bankrupt.
All the best.
Yours

Hourami,
It's huge, it's scary, but it can be dealt with. Seriously, people on here have had bigger, badder debts than that and survived it. Suggestions - sorry, this will be a long one....
1. Get yourself to the doctors and get formally diagnosed. Have him write a letter detailing how this can affect your day-to-day life.
2. If you haven't already, cut up every single one of those cards. Obvious, but still worth mentioning.
3. Send a copy of the letter from your doctor along with a request to freeze the accounts and interest payments to every creditor. Keep copies.
4. Go to the CAB or CCCS and start working out a plan. They will advise you of how to deal with it - and it might be as little as £2-5 per month to each creditor. The point is, people will rather get paid slowly than blow money on lawyers with no chance of repayment.
5. Give yourself credit for having taken those first steps to getting your life back under control.
6. Don't ever ever ever think about ending it all again. The devastation you would leave behind would be horrendous, and your family would spend forever asking themselves why they couldn't prevent you from doing it. Yes, I speak from experience of a family member here.
Baby steps, sweetheart. Take it slow. We'll be here.
Remember, it's just you, me and about 38% of the population in debt....Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

Hi hourami!
Have you conisdered bankruptcy? There is nothing to fear about it! At the end of the day it is only money! You don't own a property so there is no risk of you losing your home and could give you a fresh start.0 -
It's only money, it may be consuming you at the moment but it certainly isn't worth considering suicide over, your creditors can't take what you don't have.
An IVA is unlikely to be the best option but if you pop your SOA up for the nice people on this site to have a look at they will be able to help you better.
One point though, £500 a month for renting a room off your parents seems very high especially if you are paying for food and bills seperately, my rent for the whole house is less than that! Can you talk to them about your money situation and try and agree a lower payment for a while?Debt at 1/5/09 £21,996 _pale_

Im so sorry that you feel like that but there are others on this board that have the same level of debt so youre not the only one. Please dont even think about something like that. Theres a book called the The Money Secret which I would recommend. Its about a girl who feels the same way as you. As you are in debt, would your parents consider a lower rent? It seems quite a lot of money for a room. Would they not let you stay free for a while until you sort yourself out? I am sure that soon lots of people will be on to give you support and guidance so dont think of yourself as alone. At the end of the day its only money and its not worth your life. There will be a way out of this for you, believe me and its not ending it all.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Defo phone Payplan or CCCS and if you have any available cash invest in that book 'The Money Secret' it will lift you. Payplan and CCCS will give you the advice you need and you will feel tons better. Don't pack it all in, you're not a criminal nor a bad person. You must see a DR for your health. If you havent got your health you havent got anything. Keep reading this board, it will give you hope and hope is the biggest thing you need at present.
