So wasted fuel, wasted time and who bears the brunt of this, its the consumer it is passed on to, so yes it may seem silly for a lorry to overtake one to get a 30 second headstart, but you also have to think about momentum, if a lorry keeps slowing down it loses momentum and it takes longer to get up to speed again, again wasting fuel. So thats why they overtake each other.
My Dad's a HGV driver so I do know where you're coming from.
Unfortunately it's not the consumer who suffers though, it's the suppliers. Tesco bleed them dry and will use the fact that the drivers are out of the 1 hour time slot as a stick to beat them with when negotiating.
Laughable really that they want HGVs in a 1 hour time slot form anywhere in the country, yet they do 2 hour time slots to deliver peoples shopping from their nearest participating store.0 -

What causes tailbacks is car drivers leaving it to 20 yards to the exit slip, then decide oh its my exit and careering into lane one causing many lorries to have to break harshly causing some to jack-knife, causing major tailbacks and sometimes fatal consequences. And yes the lady in the avatar is me

Yes but when the lorry eventually gets in to tip the load they can be waiting for up to 5 hours while Tesco and the like use the lorry as additional free warehouse space, in this 5 hour waiting time, the drivers are told no you cant stay in the lorry for a kip while we tip, sit in a small room with hard chairs, temperature in the room so stuffy you end up feeling drowsy, and no hot food.
Whats laughable is some car drivers must get past the lorry at all costs and end up in accidents which delays their journey even more, more haste less speed. And yes the lady in the avatar is me

Some end up in the morgue quicker than others, couldnt be more of a DEAD line there
It was Harveybobbles "whining" in post 10, the problem he caused himself by deciding to follow behind the lorries instead of doing what he should have, moved over to lane 3 and drive at 70mph or more if he wanted, but no he saw fit to drive behind the lorries just to see what would be the outcome, then blamed them for making him late/tailbacksAnd yes the lady in the avatar is me

never in my life have I heard such !!!!!!!!.Apart from achtunglady very few of you have spoken with any brains.Motorways have 3 lanes.not fast ,slow and overtaking. If you want to sit in lane 2 behind a hgv then do so and stop !!!!ing moaning about it you stupid !!!!! It isnt hgvs that cause hold ups,its !!!!! in cars tearing along up each others !!!!!! and suddnely braking, causing a domino effect that causes cars further back coming to a virtual halt.If you observe lane 1 where all the trucks are ,you will notice that they are moving along quite nicely while you are sat in your lane stationary, this is because they observe, assess, and execute.0

listen to him, he can see the bigger picture, not the usual morons view of whats happening directly in front0 -
No, he can see the phone number on the back of the truck he's 1ft from the rear bumper of while he's doing 60!0

You've probably never been on the m5 or m1 then. Most lorries tailgate between one another, even more so when behind a car. Seen several accidents where the cars in front were able to brake, but the lorry ended up running in to the back of 'em.
I think all lorries should be fitted with some sort of radar device that automatically makes the lorry slow down if it gets within 4s of the vehicle infront. And maybe fit same device to BMW drivers too.0
