OMG!! so narrow minded.. lorries are used to carry EVERYTHING we all use day to day.... but nooo lets get them off the road, keep them locked in the first lane on the Mways.. make them go faster.. never mind that 40 tons of goods would take MILES to stop!!

the roads and motorways are slow and crowded due to the amount of traffic on them, not just lorries.
when the first motorways were built there was not half the traffic on them that there is today...
how many of you would be willing to pay extra road tax to pay for wider roads / motorways.... not many I'm guessing.
and if more drivers drove with more fore-thought and consideration then maybe there would be less accidents on the roads... a little less road rage and a lot more patients required!!

and for all your info... hubby is a long distance lorry driver, drives a 40ft truck that can only go 56 miles a hour! thats the gov regulation. but not all the trucks on the roads are english and not all are restricted. (or legal i should add)

    this is just My opinon...

I would be happier if the government would use more of the money ( I recall somewhere in the region of £40 billion a year) it makes off road users, on the roads and less of it to subsidise railways ..
First thing I would do for the Midlands would be to buy back the (almost empty) M6 toll road

Can't we get rid of the rail roads, and make them a speed limit free toll road? Only losers and drunks/students use trains anyway.

Remember, without HGV's, no car driver is going anywhere, no fuel, no food.

It is common sense that HGV snail racing seriously causes hold-ups on the whole motorway.. if you think of traffic as water, it takes the path of least resistance, introduce a partial blockage, a rolling road-block then everything else is forced through a smaller gap. To keep the motorways running well, it is all about the smooth flow of traffic, HGVs upset this flow when they do inappropriate and unnecessary overtake moves and start to cause queueing of all other traffic

Also, post 43 is ridiculous, I mean it really is...
What causes tailbacks is car drivers leaving it to 20 yards to the exit slip, then decide oh its my exit and careering into lane one causing many lorries to have to break harshly causing some to jack-knife, causing major tailbacks and sometimes fatal consequences.

... it reads like that is a very common occurrence, I know people do go from lane 3 / 2 / 1 / slip road just like that, but it is not responsible for holding up motorways under normal conditions. There is enough leeway generally for most adjustments in speed. This is not as large a problem that achtunglady makes it out to be. Surely a rolling partial road-block is more of a problem for traffic flow, isn't that just common sense?

I have experienced HGVs on 2 lane motorway links doing this whereby the whole flow of traffic is brought down resulting in extensive congestion behind them, it happens all the time on the motorway.. and sometimes one manoeuvre will be a 5 minute + affair.. their amount of gain is absolutely negligible.
  • This thread is so funny, All cars drivers should be made to drive a HGV in a safe area before being allowed in the road.

When a lorry drives into the back of a car its always the lorries fault isnt it?
As a HGV driver i see it every day too many people in so much of a rush brain goes into auto pilot, must overtake the lorry, must overtake the lorry.
One guy nearly ran down a road worker laying cones out on the M54 whilst trying to overtake me before hitting the cones, despite the fact signs were laid out way before them. And the fact i was in a line of traffic that was already slowing down in the now single lane.

Take a look at the picture in post #26 Traffic on the right facing the camera, Do you all think that red car has left a safe distance before pulling back into the middle lane? From what i can see its probably about 6 feet. Car drivers excuse in the event of an accident? he was tailgating me. One reason why our vehicles were fitted with onboard trackers & recording equipment.

...HGV's should be made to stay in lane 1....

er...they should also be fitted with indicators so we can see when they are going to overtake! ;)

  • Here we go again. You've only got a car licence but you KNOW everything about driving. I'm an HGV 1 driver (that's those big trucks pulling trailers !). I took 2 practical tests over and above the car test (and my motor bike test), plus theory and medicals. I have to take further medicals every 5 years. If I came on here and stated questioning Martin Lewis' ideas, when I hadn't a clue, I'd quite rightly be shot down in flames (metaphorically !). So after being in my cab looking in one of my 6 mirrors (count them) at the idiots who seemingly can only read the road in Braille, then reading some of the ill informed rubbish on this post excuse me if I laugh my head off.

yes they are important for what they deliver, but whats on board should make no difference to their driving manner. Its like people who stick baby on board stickers on their car? What difference should it actually make

you people make me laugh..... CAR drivers are the worst!! think they own the road... keep the lorries off.... motor bikes should be banned!!!!! OMG get over your selves!! try sitting in another seat for a change and see what the view is like!!!!! bikes get hated because they can move through traffic faster than cars... NOOO dont allow that!! lorries are slooowww and inconsiderate!!! ban them to a single lane!!!!
I ride a bike... and know that car drivers dont look and even worse dont care if there is a bike about! move over to the middle of the road and block them...
over take the lorrie its in your way!!!!

SLOW DOWN AND BL**Y LOOK AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!!!
