I think HGV's shouldn't be allowed in lanes 2 or 3. I was on the M53 last week, middle of the day, traffic flowing ok. 2 HGV's in lane one. 2nd lorry decides it wants to overtake first one, so pulls out into lane 2. My my own benefit I slowed down and followed behind these two lorries to see how long it took to get past. It took just under two miles to get past them. Thats two whole miles of traffic being forced to slow down. Two wholes miles of slower traffic causing traffic jams further back.

HGV's should be made to stay in lane 1.

    Thats my rant over.

Pity Conor isn't here to tell me otherwise...

I don't think they are allowed in lane 3.

But I think they tend to overtake to keep themselves getting too bored. I am sure when you are driving in the same lane for 4 hours it gets very boring, so a little overtaking adds a bit of variety!

Don't blame the drivers ...There just trying to get by just like yourself .
Motorways don't work nowadays due to the amount of heavy goods vehicles.
4 lanes should be minimum now 2 for trucks to get past each other and 2 they can't enter for smaller vehicles to get past .
To be honest spending a few years driving overseas is a good way of putting things in perspective ..Our Motorways are bad only because we demand so much of them.

Due to the amount of cars not heavy goods vehicles. There is a lot less trucks on the roads since the credit crunch.
  • I agree that lorries should stay in lane 1.

The effect of the sometimes 10 minute overtaking duel is ridiculous.

Why slow down for? Why not use the 3rd lane and be on your merry way, HGVs are mostly speed limited to 56mph but an empty lorry will go that bit faster, as will a fully loaded one on a downhill road. Speed limit for a car is 70 on the motorway, do it and get out of the way of the lorries, its people like you causing the hold ups, you yourself said:

They arent allowed in lane three UNLESS DIRECTED BY POLICE TO DO SO, but on an ordinary run of the mill day, no, they have to use lane 1 and 2

Like I said - it was for my own benefit. I always wanted to know what caused tailbacks and it's lorries overtaking each other.

We cant because of the 1000's of cars stuck behind the "duel". Not enough room in lane 3 for everyone.
