  • Just been phoned by vets, and her bloods have not improved at all which means her kidneys are to damaged to get better,They have said I can bring her home for 24hrs to say good bye,or go into the vets to say goodbye before they put her down,I had woke up to the phone ringing and was speaking to the vet without my full wits about me so couldnt give her answer, saying that I still dont know what to do,I would love to bring smudge home ,but my little 4 yr old girl is autistic ,she has been missing smudgy so much and I think if smudgy comes home she wont understand that smudgy isnt better, and I cant imagine myself even taking her back to the vets to put her down, but I dont want her dying and her last few days have been in a cage,im at a total loss,I really dont know what to do

Poor you, when I saw you had posted I was a mix of hope for you & dread for you at what you would say.
If its going to confuse your little girl & Smudgy isn't going to pull through then maybe you need to make the final decission today, you could vist the vets soon & say goodbye & then maybe stay with her or go back in after.
Don't worry about the last few days, you've only done what any of us would do, now you know Smudgey won't pull through you are doing the right thing again by her.
I'm not even sure bring her home would be such a good idea anyway - apart from your worries of your little girl. Smudgey must be in a pretty bad way & she needs the vets on hand.
She won't go feeling she is alone in a cage, she will go as a cat that had a happy life with a loving family who done their best by her.

Oh no Im so sorry. its the news we had been dreading. Can you get someone to look after your little girl while you go to the vets to be with Smudge?
I think you are right about confusing your daughter regarding Smudge being home again and then gone again.
What a rotten time for you, sorry theres nothing I can do except sympathise.

your poor little kitten, I am wild that someone could do that, I dont believe a kitten would drink so much as to be off the charts like your vet said, but yes, how on earth could it be proved :( I think if i was in your shoes, I wouldnt want to move smudgy, I would go down and sit with her for a while, then let them put her to rest. Sending you lots of strength, its never easy saying goodbye to a pet.

  • Ive just rang back the vets, and begged them if I paid more money is there anything else at all they can do,I cant beleive they didnt mention this on are previous call but they said, there is a VERY slim chance that if we bring her home and put her on a kidney diet, she may just pull through, they said if she goes quiet or starts drinking loads of water we cant pretend to our selves she's ok we must bring her back to be put down, they even said they can probably get us free samples of the kidney diet, any way she is checking with the other vets to see if they agree that this is something worth trying or not,so I have a bit of hope again

i am so so sorry this has happened. i wish i could make it all better for you, i am finding this so upsetting so god only knows how you feel.

if your cat is quite ill then it may be best to let her go at the vets, however if your vet feels your cat is well enough it might be an idea to have her put to sleep at your house, some vets do come out to do house visits. although of course i realise this may not be practical with your daughter, however, might there be a way you can 'dress the scenario up' so that she gets the idea that your kitty is leaving you all?

my heart is aching for yu, not only are you dealing with the los of your pet but you alos have to manage how your little girl is going to react...all because of your nasty, evil !!!!!!! of a neighbour...i really hope he gets what is coming to him xxx

  • I am so mad that some vets do this ... sometimes if it seems a bit in the balance or looks like the owner may have to devote a lot of time to caring to their pet, some vets just assume that it would be too much and start talking about putting the pet to sleep.

The old vet I was with said that to me when my greyhound broke his leg. "Oh I think it would be better to put him to sleep," and I thought oh, he must mean it is too bad to mend or too bad for a greyhound to cope with ... when I begged if there was any other way, he said, "well yes, but it would mean you keeping a watch on him."

So, because he had thought dedicated and constant care of my pet for a certain amount of time would be too much for me, HE had made the decision to advise me to put him to sleep. The swine. Okay, so it meant me sleeping on a duvet cover downstairs with my dog for just over 6 weeks, half-carrying him in and out when he needed to "go" ... but he went on to live another 10 years and his leg healed just fine.

Needless to say, a change of vets has happily put me in touch with the most fab, most caring vet ever and I frequently tell him he must never retire!

But that's all by the by ...

I can totally understand the situation you are in right now ... wanting to do the best for your little cat and your little girl ... and whilst you would never want your cat to suffer more, if there is a chance that just a change of diet might do the trick and help, then I would have to say personally that I would go for it and give her the chance. You've tried everything else up to now and this is the last thing you can do ...

I would say to your daughter that she has been very very poorly and there is a chance she may be too ill to stay with you but she is coming home to see if she will be okay.
I wouldn't talk about death or having her put to sleep ... anything like that may just upset and confuse her.

A lot of companies give free samples of special diet food ... they know that once a cat is diagnosed with this, that or t'other, they are usually on that specific diet for life, so in the long run it pays for them to do it!

Well, a mixture of sadness, uncertainty and a little tiny bit of hope too ... as I said, if it were me then I think I would try your cat on the diet but I would give her a set amount of time ... maybe a week, maybe a fortnight because if she wasn't showing signs of it helping her then you would have to make "that" decision for her .... she's gone through so much, her little body must be in shock but you know I have seen some pets kept in at the vets who gave up and looked to be on their last legs yet when the vet suggested the owners take them home to "say their goodbyes properly" they really perked up, feeling better and more relaxed being home with their owners.

Let us know how you go on ... we're all thinking about you xxx
  • Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear this. Poor Smudgy and what an awful situation for you all to be in. Am thinking of you all. If it were up to me I'd be inclined to see if I could try the diet because she is such a young cat and I think after everything she"s been through she deserves the chance to fight for her life. Don"t know what to suggest about your daughter though. I think that even if she wasn"t battling with health problems of her own she would still be very upset and missing her cat. Young children can be remarkably resilient though and some of the things they say and do after the loss of a loved pet can be very surprising although upsetting to us older adults. Our beloved cat Sparkle was killed in August and so far my 3 year old as well as crying for her has asked if Santa will bring her back at Christmas and if she dresses up as a witch on halloween will she be able to magic her back to us!!! Makes me want to cry just thinking about it!!! I think you just have to be as gentle and kind as you can be with your daughter and if the worst happens explain that Smudgy knows that you all love her and that even though she can"t be with you anymore because she was so sick she"s still watching over you. If you bring Smudgy home and try her on the diet you just have to explain to your daughter that she"s still a very sick cat and that she may still not get better but you want to give her the chance to try. I'd involve her as much as you are able to in her care as well as this might help. Thinking of you all.

I am so very very sorry that your puss may not make it,I sincerly hope she does.I'd like to get hold of the !!!!!! who done this & pour anti-freeze down his gob! See how he likes it!!
I'm glad in a way that Orbit went on his own time & not had to be put to sleep. He went at home in his own surroundings & smells & not in an antiseptic treatment room.
People were telling me to put him down in Dec 08 but I refused,he was'nt in any pain & his quality of life was good for the last 9 months.
Getting Daisy less than a week after he went was so vital to my healing,it took my mind off Orbit & I see so much of Orbit in Daisy,I know he'd aprove.
I really hope your puss pulls thru,I'm rooting for her recovery!!!!
