  • Thank you all SO much for replying to my rant, I really appreciate it.

Do you know what - I hadn't even considered the pizza situation from a health and safety chicken/salmonella point of view at all as I was so upset. My DH never has anything to do with cooking, apart from buttering toast and now cutting up pizza. I am strict about hygiene and have colour coded chopping boards for different foods.

He ate both of the pizzas last night and the funny thing is that he had bad diarrhoea this morning and was locked in the bathroom for quite a while. It didn't even occur to me at the time that it might be connected - maybe it isn't and is just an amusing coincidence for me, but it has cheered me up a bit now.

Thank you for the advice about his sister, I really like all of the suggestions but will think about it a bit more as I am still so angry with her at the moment.

And that's a good idea about going on strike - I will do that, and it won't stop at the meat cooking either.
    xx

I agree that regardless of being a vegetarian that is just not safe to eat for anybody.

As for the sister I think thats shocking. Someones personal choice shouldn't be subject to a joke or 'see, she didn't even notice' attitude.

Aside from the complete disrespect, it's horrible food hygiene. I'd give your OH a food hygiene course. Actually, if it were me I'd probably think about giving him salmonella, but I'm vengeful that way.

And I wouldn't eat at his sister's place ever again either. Often, someone who's had a strict vegetarian diet for a long time can have horrible gastro-reactions to meat, and for someone to be so cavalier about your health and your beliefs is appalling.

  • I've been vegetarian for 25 years and would feel exactly the same way in your situation. You were lied to and deceived by people you trust and that's a horrible thing to find out and not easy to deal with.

I know it's not easy being surrounded by meat eaters who refuse to understand or even try to but just remember there are plenty of us veggies out here who think the same way as you. ;)

    Ha ha. Good!

Now might be the perfect time to impart a little food hygeine knowledge - I once read that raw chicken should be viewed in much the same way as raw sewage. That little analogy should have him back in the backroom pretty quick:rotfl:
  • Two points spring to my mind...
    a) your hubby is being an idiot to not know that this is important to you - he may not agree but he should respect you - and he's not doing that
    b) serious hygiene issues - get those resolved pronto. While I'm not an obsessive cleaner of surfaces - even I wouldn't use utensils covered in raw meat juices...

I once ate a not quite fully cooked chicken drumstick at a bbq - had bad belly ache and squits but not sick or anything more like I would have expected (but it was confirmed by others being ill too - and more ill than me) - so it is possible for it to be related ;)

  • I've been veggie for 20 years and no way would I have eaten that pizza. My boyfriend knows that too and he would never get meat near my food. Your DH should surely know by now what is and isn't acceptable to you.

What his sister did is just awful. I wouldn't go round there again. Not just to eat, but I wouldn't go round there at all.

    Hello

I am a yoga practitioner and have been a vegetarian for quite a while now, mainly because it is against the non-violence principles to kill animals and meat takes a long time to digest so it really affects my practice and energy levels. Like you I respect meat-eaters (my OH, for example) but what I absolutely will not tolerate is the lack of hygiene. Knifes and chopping boards used to cut raw meat are a breeding ground for samonella, etc...may be you can centre your argument on the fact that not only SIL is being very disrespectful or your choices, but she is also putting thewhole family at risk by not having a strict hygiene policy in the kitchen. Point out to your OH the fact that his tummy is a bit loose . I woudl presonally refuse to eat at SIL ever again, knowing she is less that scrupulous in the kitchen...It is your right to feel upset. I have had the odd bit of meat if I got to eat at friends houses, because I think it is more important to share what they cooked for me and appreciate their efforts than being strict, but at least I have the choice. Having said that, knowing I am going , they cook meat-less stuff anyway.

    Good luck

It's almost certainly the raw chicken that gave him the runs. Apart from dodgy shellfish there's almost nothing as dangerous as getting raw chicken juices in your food just before eating it.

I think your OH and his sister are being hugely unreasonable and disrespectful. You're bending over backwards to accommodate their dietary preferences, and spending loads of time cooking food you won't even eat, but they can't be bothered to take a few minutes to accommodate yours? I'm not veggie myself but if vegetarian friends are coming for dinner I check the ingredients in everything - and usually cook veggie for everyone so there's no problem with "cross-contamination".

Ask your sister how she would feel if she ate chicken stew, then someone told her it was cat stew and laughed at her for being picky.
