    Hi
I have to admit I liked getting my gold natwest debit card out of wallet and using it when I went shopping... call me a snob or materialistic but i did....BUT ..... now they have sent me a replacement which i can only describe as vile!!

Its a purplely pink colour and looks cheap and nasty! I dislike this card so much I may move bank accounts!!

Is there any one who knows a bank that allows me to be snobby again and apply for an account that offers a gold debit card (with no monthly fee)

    Thank you

    PG

Well, we're all individuals, but if that's all you have to worry about, you're lucky.

    Have you tried painting it?;)

Ok, I'm ashamed to admit that (albeit on a lesser scale than the OP) I'm a card snob :o Well, not even a snob really - I realise that everyone these days has a gold/platinum thingy and that it's those people who in fact are probably the skint ones, whilst those paying in cash are probably far better off.

But still, I can't help but feel an irrational sense of pleasure when I get a card through the post and its nice and shiny - my Nationwide Gold and black Egg Money card look particularly nice, whilst my (unused, but not for cosmetic reasons lol!) Barclaycard Student has childish looking drawings on it that make it look really tacky. Equally I've got a Natwest basic debit card thats a bland grey and looks like something from the 1980s!

The thing is - I wouldn't by any means be embarassed of using my Barclaycard or Natwest (and if they were interest-free/amazing cashback I'd by all means use them!) it's just that the Nationwide and Egg cards are so much more aesthetically pleasing to have in my wallet :) Even if no-one else cares it looks nice, I do :o

My egg money card (old style) is aesthetically pleasing because I get cash back and am about to get £200 just for doing my shopping. They can send me one in any colour they like:)
  • Actually, wouldn't the truly rich have someone to shop and pay for them? thats menial stuff!

ETA: Oops I replied to a post on page 1! Did not see there was 5 pages! excuse the random post!!

I can understand how you feel. The thought some unsuspecting person may think you are gay as it is a pink card or worse still think it is issued by sub prime organization. We snobs must stand together.

Martin where are you when you need you in our hour of great need!

Which credit card company was it that allowed you (for a £10 or so fee) to upload your own picture and put it on the card?.
Back in the 1990s National & Provincial Building Society offered the security device of using a photograph of the holder on the card. There was no fee for that.

An earlier post on this thread did mention a card (possibly Barclays) which charges, I think, £5 if you want to use any picture you choose yourself.

It's Natwest who charges you if you want a picture on the card, not Barclays.

I'm often surprised at the number of people who pay by DEBIT rather than CREDIT card. I have not used my debit card for many years apart except for drawing cash (which in itself is a rare occurrence as cash is largely redundant these days).

The thing that worries me about using a debit card is that if it gets scammed then the scammer has a MAINLINE into your money supply. If your credit card gets scammed then it's not YOUR money that is being drained, it's the bank's money instead.

I have recently been scammed on 3 separate credit cards, with one fraud being over £8k on a single transaction. I was not particularly worried as the bank have a duty to put things back in order, but it can still take a few days before they sort it out, but I would not want to see my current account suddenly drained, like on payday before I get the chance to switch the money to a savings account. (I then pay off my credit cards via may savings account using bacs at the end of the following month)

Im amazed that this thread was even started, its a piece of plastic that no one knows what balance is on it (credit card) or what balance is left in your bank (debit card) except you, so who cares what it looks like.

I have a standard natwest step account, no overdraft and its a solo card, so yes some places don't accept solo, but i get around it with taking cash out and its a pale blue colour, but hey its the key to my real hard earn't cash.

I feel great paying by debit card as i know i am living within my means, if someone wants to judge the colour of my card when i am paying for things go right ahead. I can be a snob feeling great that i can afford what i am buying and not using credit as have done that and am now paying the price with paying it all off on a DMP.

In terms of being scamed like mentioned and its safer to use a credit card, for me id disagree. I have control, a credit card can easily get you out of control, you might be scammed x amount, but boy can you rank up x amount yourself and put yourself in trouble. I check online banking every single day and check every amount to everything i have used my card for each day, if ever i noticed anything wasn't right id be on the phone to the bank quick smart.

And boliston you say you're surprised by how many people pay by debit card and not credit card, well here is my example as to why people don't pay by credit card. We've used them, got into trouble, realised our debit is too high and got rid of credit altogether and are now comfortable, relaxed and stress free using our own money to purchase things (not saying credit is bad for everyone if you manage it properly hats off to you, but many like myself don't)

I think you are making an assumption here that everyone with a credit card is unable to control their finances. You may have got yourself into a mess, that doesn't mean everyone is going to!!
