debit card snob!

  • I have to agree with Stella on this one, I have several CCs all used for different things as they have different features. All get paid off in full every month, some get played off against each other for large purchases so I always get 0% interest as I call them and ask them what deal they can do me as 'the other one is offering this or that'. Im a good customer, and never pay interest and make the most of the rewards each card gives me. Its all about being sensible and playing the system.

Even if you only use debit cards to avoid the worry of running up debts, there is still a risk of ending up with a huge overdraft on a debit card.

Cards are old hat. I just stand in the queue until I reach the till then pull out an old weathered envelope containing a grand flick through the £50's and pay cash. It really catches a lot of people out as they don't know which way it has to go in to the chip and pin machine ;p

Lol that's the way to do it hehe :D Joking aside, tbh I think if there is any kind of "prestige" in relation to making payments in the UK, cash probably has it more than anything - I remember a couple of years ago when me and my dad went to Currys to help one of my dad's friends choose a television set. For some suspicious reason (tax evasion suspicious not drug dealer suspicious lol) the guy nearly always dealt in cash.

After umming and ahhing a bit the guy finally picked out a tv costing just over a grand. The sales assistant nodded, looking and sounding like he'd done this kind of thing a million times before when he said in a bored sounding voice 'pay by cash or card?' clearly thinking he knew what the answer was.
The look on his face when the guy pulled out an envelope full of £50s and £20s (it just looked so suave, and so much cooler than pulling out a credit card) :D To be fair the sales rep was pretty professional once he'd gotten over the shock, and took us into the manager's office where they counted it all out and checked the £50s, and a few minutes later we left with a nice new tv :)

To think, if it had been a card transaction it wouldn't have even been worth mentioning - yet the sales rep was probably talking about this particular sale for weeks. Cash really is king! :D

Edit: I realise this is the 3rd post I've made on this thread already, its only just over one page long :o
  • I've got a Natwest basic debit card thats a bland grey and looks like something from the 1980s!
There's nothing wrong with old-school... imagine how cool it would be to pull one of these out of your wallet today...

  • I'm really fussy about how my name appears on my cards. I opened a new bank account last month and they sent the card through with 'Miss' (I'm a Ms), my full first name (the only time this ever gets used is when someone is angrily shouting at me!), and one of my four middle initials (obviously they can't fit all four on the card so I always have none than just one, I never use my middle names anyway, in fact I don't know why my parents saddled me with so many!). I actually phoned the bank up and told them to send me a new card with the right name on (e.g. Ms T Manc) and refused to use the original one! I think they thought I was a bit bonkers but I'd rather have a card with what I consider to be my proper name on. I especially hated the 'Miss' - to me a 'Miss' is a little girl in a frilly frock with curly pigtails, not a fully grown adult!

I think you are fully right in what you done and your thoughts.

One of the many things Barclays did to loose me as a customer was similar to this.

I have a three syllable first name and a Slavonic surname.

Essentially very long. All card issuers have either put my full name with middle initial, which slips over to the "VISA" symbol, or first initials and surname.

Not Barclays! Full first name, middle initial, and first syllable of my surname... so sign of the rest.

I think after that complaint they decided I complained too much as not long after they told me they were closing my accounts... well.. fine. I'd already opened one with Lloyds TSB anyway (Sooo much better)

I agree with you on this. It is something you see everyday, so you want it to be correct.

When I ordered my first chequebook from HSBC when I turned 16, the man asked how I wanted my name shown. I wasn't really sure so I said anything will do. His reply was "I'll send you two and you can choose". The two books arrived, one showed Mr G A Person whilst the other was Glider A Person (name changed for obvious reasons!) Strangely, I now appear to have two "streams" of cheque books. The Mr G A Person is cheque number 10xxx, the other is 20xxx. When each book finishes, I'm sent another book showing the same name and continuing the numbers.

Maybe you need to get out more. Why do you want people to know/think you have money? A card is a card, they all do the same thing.
