The look on his face when the guy pulled out an envelope full of £50s and £20s (it just looked so suave, and so much cooler than pulling out a credit card) :D
Hate to break it to you but a grand in cash isn't that rare.

A guy came into work a while back wanting all the Xbox's we had. Literally, ALL of them. So, I brought out about 25, and put it all together (came to just over £2k), and so asked for a method of payment.

He put his hand in his rucksack and pulled out a wadge of £50's and just slid it across the desk - now *that* looked impressive.

On topic - Yes i'm a "snob". Obviously if I have 2 bits of plastic, i'll want to use the nicer looking one if they are exactly the same in every other way...

He was a Polish guy, turned out he filled his car full, drove back to Poland, chipped 'em and then sold them on, came back and bought more with the proceeds...

  • I think some people on this thread own horses with sore backs -perhaps you could climb down off them??

People like flash looking or "status" cards for a variety of reasons, with some its about aspiration, with some its about insecurity and with some its about showing off. I don't see anything wrong with any of these things.

For those who aspire i.e. someone whos grown up without much money who sees a guy using his Black American Express or Coutts Card would be forgiven for thinking "I want a taste of that".

Some of us, clearly not those interested in equine sports, are insecure. I'm insecure...because I'm human. Unless this is some haven for horse riders with no insecurities who've never thought about how others percieve them, then I'm sure they are insecure too, perhaps not about cards but there will be something there I guarantee it. A by-product of a certain type of insecurity is that we care about status symbols or how others percieve us, otherwise we'd wear second hand clothes all the time and drive ladas - afterall its cost effective and functional!

The others who want to show off - let them!! Its only the insecure and aspirational among us who notice anyway. I am happy to be insecure and have aspirations.

So I personally want to earn more money and have the trappings this brings, in a small corner of my mind I want other people to know in subtle ways aswell - as opposed to throwing piles of money at people I dress smartly and make informed choices about what I do with my money, i.e. I have an american express platinum - expensive at £300 - an informed choice when you account for the fact that I fly over 20 times a year for my job and the fact that I get free airport lounge access(with free food and drink as opposed to airport prices) saves me the cash I spend on the fee several times over, not to mention that I get 1 airmile for every £1 I spend on the card - again it pays for itself. Free worldwide travel insurance for me and partner and a raft of other things.

I suspect that some members of this forum would think "nice looking card" and make some assumption about my personal wealth or status.

Some other members, if they squinted their eyes just enough to see from upon horseback, would think "mug, he doesn't need that, its ridiculously expensive etc..." if they noticed at all of course, because they never notice anything about other people, how they're dressed, what they eat or what cards they carry...............:A

I have actually seen people whip out a gold card and then look around and over their shoulder to make sure others in the queue are impressed by their card.
I've always quite fancied Tony Blair and I still do.

I was ridiculously excited about getting a platinum barclaycard, I'm a born and bred (but now escaped... :D) rough council estate girl and you don't see those where I come from!!
But I still prefer to use my girly pink virgin card - many a sales assistant have said how nice it looks and that they've never seen a pink one! What a reason to love a credit card :)

I love my NatWest debit card because it's purple (my fave colour) - not looking forward to getting one of their new Visa cards with the big ugly logo on the front!

Come to think of it, I'm sure I only joined NatWest in the first place because of the colour scheme of their branches. In my defence I was only 16 at the time. Luckily I'm happy with them. I don't think I would move banks if they brought in a new horrible colour scheme, but then I'm older and wiser now...

They used to let you do that in New Zealand. Needless to say it got abused to hell hahah. !!!!!!, swear words, copyright images. Became impossible for them to manage so they had to can it.
