Bluray is ONLY a storage device
Its down to whats needed to fit on a disc.
I must say id be suprised if PS3s UNCHARTED 2 would fit on a dvd without cutting some of it out (or SERIOUSLY compressing it)

right so you put it on more than one disc
    so whats the difference?

    but wheres the benefit?
i can get a standalone big name BR player for not much over £100
so what does the 360 drive offer over that?

Why does it have to offer more than a stand alone player?

Theres no difference apart from the obvious 'disc swap' and the fact that data 'generally' loads faster ~

How fast can you read/write data on a Blu-ray disc?

According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps). Blu-ray also has the potential for much higher speeds, as a result of the larger numerical aperture (NA) adopted by Blu-ray Disc. The large NA value effectively means that Blu-ray will require less recording power and lower disc rotation speed than DVD and HD-DVD to achieve the same data transfer rate. While the media itself limited the recording speed in the past, the only limiting factor for Blu-ray is the capacity of the hardware. If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps). This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future.

well it has to offer somthing to make me buy it surely?
i doubt its going to be massivly cheaper
if its like the HD DVD drive then you need a 360 on plus the drive
the 360 isnt the quietest of machines which goesagainst it for media playback

It's a Blu Ray drive to play Blu Rays, that's what it will offer. If you want to watch Blu Ray films then it'll appeal to you, if you don't it won't. It's a simple concept. It'll integrate into 360 platform as a complete Media Centre with the bonus that it won't require any extra cabling other than what the Xbox itself uses.

It's too early to speculate about pricing, but do you really think Microsoft are going to price it above and beyond what branded stand alone players are retailing for when all it is is a drive?

Can't say I notice the noise of the console, I'm usually more engrossed in what's on the screen and coming out of the speakers.

It doesn't matter if the Xbox 360 will still continue to use DVD as the format the games come in, it'll mean people will either have to get along by swapping discs or upgrade the hard drives and use the already existing feature in the Dashboard to install them to it. I assume the latter is what Microsoft are aiming for, especially now they're selling the Super Elite consoles with a 250GB drive.

well i run the 360 and PS3 ,the PS3 is usually favourite for playback as its the quieter fo the two
i didnt really notice it until i got the PS3
personally i think they are a bit late into the game with a BR drive
the 360 has been out since Nov 2005,how long before a new beast is on the horizon

I am a PS3 fan personally. My reasons:

PS3 is much quiter than the XBOX
I personally prefer the games on PS3.
Blu Ray was important to me as I wanted to watch Blu Ray films
    Free online play with PS3.
Wireless built in (although I wouldn't use wireless personally).
The option to install other Operating systems on the PS3 without voiding warranty.
You can also upgrade the PS3 HDD with a 2.5" SATA drive (laptop drive). I've now upgraded mine to 500GB. All withing the warranty still.

Someone above mentioned the xbox is better at connecting to your pc and sharing media, but I have Tversity media server installed and can't fault it. Transfer of files from pc to PS3 is flawless.

My only problem with the xbox is yes it may be cheaper, but keep it a couple of years and with all the add ons (online subscription, the new blu ray disk reader they are talking about) you won't have saved that much money at all.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
