This article is a year old, but highlights some of the original issues with Chrome last year, "privacy" wise.

There doesn't seem to be anything untoward there.

Chrome creates a unique ID through which a user can be theoretically identified is the main one but a better list is here: http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_chrome_vs_iron.php . Now you can say its all theoretical etc, so I assume you'd be fine with Phorm as well.

Which is why I use Iron instead. BTW your speaking to someone who has ghostery blocking all its listed web trackers and Track Me Not installed in firefox, not to mention adblock plus and NoScript.
  • I've recently moved over to Firefox, I had Google Chrome for a while but it started to run slow. I'm having the same problems with Firefox now, it has frozen on me 10mins into every new session. Is there anything I can do to stop that?

Well it could be your system or a multitude of reasons.

Clear out the cache and temp files, or run CCleaner every week or so...

Isn't everyone who is connected to the internet already identified by a "unique ID"?

Most of the major things on that list can be disabled in Chrome (site suggestion, mistyped address correction, error reporting, etc).

Iron's ad blocker is a big plus though.

Of course you are but that isn't being tracked to provide suggestions. Google is an advertising company, do you really think there'll be a google supported adblocker for chrome? Sure they can be turned off but who's gonna bother?
  • I use a PC at work and a Macbook at home and always use Firefox, its quick reliable and has loads of useful plugins!!

Everyone who uses Google is tracked by a cookie unless they (a) opt-out, or (b) use Safari. Google have even open-sourced the opt-out plugin for Firefox and IE.

As for a unique identifier in the browser itself, this is what Google do with it:
Your copy of Google Chrome includes one or more unique application numbers. These numbers and information about your installation of the browser (e.g., version number, language) will be sent to Google when you first install and use it and when Google Chrome automatically checks for updates. If you choose to send usage statistics and crash reports to Google, the browser will send us this information along with a unique application number as well. Crash reports can contain information from files, applications and services that were running at the time of a malfunction. We use crash reports to diagnose and try to fix any problems with the browser.

There's an ad-blocker for Firefox, and they make their money from Google ads, so I don't see why there shouldn't be one for Chrome.

If Iron comes with a default search engine, guess how they make their money?

I use firefox mainly and am not tracked.

According to google yes, according to phorm they just want to target advertising specifically to you. Personally I dont want any info going to anyone unless I opt in.

As long as I dont see adds I dont care how they make money.

Again not my concern. And its up to me what the default search engine is.
