    You can probably tell I'm not very computer literate !

    I'ne looked at the system properties and the system is windows XP home edition 2002 service pack 3 if that helps ?

    Yep, that's okay. That's the most up to date service pack there is for Windows XP.

  • If you go into the control panel, will it allow you to repair the installation without the CD? Sometimes it will allow this, but more often than not, it won't.

    That is exactly the message I am getting with an error code 1706
  • Have you tried downloading and running the Office installation clean up utility suggested in one of the later posts on that site?

  • Does the manual download direct from the Microsoft site fail also? Some users on the internet report that using the stand alone package is the only way they can get it to install.

    Actually, I'm only just realising that it isn't probably going to work as you'll probably have to re-install office if you do that, and since you don't have to disc, that wouldn't be any use!
