XP Update issues

Morning All,

I don't appear to be getting any updates for my desktop which runs XP professional, the task bar is telling me updates are available but when I try to load them I get a message saying I need to insert a disc !

Any Ideas ?

  • Which Service Pack of XP are you using? If you're still on SP2 you may have to upgrade to SP3 before any new updates can be installed. Had this problem on an old PC of mine.

Use the Microsoft update site http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

keep re running it till you don't get offered any more updates twice.

Now the kids have finished their homework I can finally use the PC !

I've logged on as normal, updates ready for computer symbol is in the task bar if I click on this automatic updates screen appears click on install the process starts ok then I get the following message
M/S office XP professional with front page
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removeable disk that is not available, insert the M/S office XP prof with front page disk and click OK.

I don't have a disc so click OK anyway and get the following message

Error 1706 setup cannot find the required files check your connection to the network or CD ROM drive for other potential solutions to this problem see C:\program files\microsoft office\office 10\1033\setup.HLP

Any ideas on what's going on ?
    Cheers Ade

You're attempting to install an update for Microsoft Office XP, which for some reason requires you to have the original installation disc(s) to hand. If you don't have the discs, you can't install it.

Can you tell us the name of the update?

XP service pack 3 update 1 of 1

It seems to freeze half way through then another box appears with the following

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removeable disk that is not available, insert the M/S office XP prof with front page disk and click OK.

Would that be KB832671 by any chance? If so, you can get the full update (OfficeXpSp3-kb832671-fullfile-enu.exe) from here.

How do I find out what that is ?

All i seem to get is the message box appears !
  • Can I ask what version of Office you currently have? Do you actually have Office XP, or is it Office 2003, 2007 etc?

You will see this version number on the splash screen when you open up Word, Excel etc.
