The drive reports itself as 'WDCWD80EB-28CGH2', if you look at the OP's post of Yesterday at 5:55 PM.

Yep, but sometimes my Freecom external hard drive reports itself as a Samsung! The rest of the time, it is a Freecom.

Freecom don't make Hard Disks - it probably is a Samsung inside the box.
  • Thanks everyone ... left the computer in the shop, I do not have much computer knowlegde.. the guy siad he charged me 185 for a new processor, ram and a fan... had a look at it and said my drive is 80b and is cracked! I said well you told me i would have a much better computer if I paid you £185 but since getting it back i have had low disk memory... he said i must have dropped it which I never did!

Quoted me £135 for a new drive and charged me £15 today for the pleasure of telling me my hard drive is cracked!

I left it it in because it kept switching itself off and re booting.

At this point, I'd be looking at getting myself a decent lawyer. Or take some tough looking bloke with you next time who is willing to get into a real argument with them about it. What they look like they're doing is replacing just about everything in your computer, while taking you for a ride at the same time.

I really don't see how everything is going to need replaced at the same time. And by the way, a new hard drive would never cost £135, unless you were putting a couple of TB in.

  • This computer shop is seriously trying to rip you off. Don't pay them any more money. You need to get someone technical to go with you next time and get your money back. If the hard drive was cracked it would not work at all, it would not report low disk space.

Yeah, but the computer usually recognises it as a Freecom, cause that's what the brand name is. No idea what's inside it though - don't want to break it by opening up! :rotfl:

I misunderstood as it turns out I never got a new drive, the guy I thought I had got a new drive but today he pulls out the paperwork and showed me I only got a Ram and a porocessor and a fan for £185

That's different from a Hard Disk's firmware reporting that it's a specific model, as per the OP's post - with yours, Freecom have just programmed their name in to make it look as though it's a 'Freecom' drive.

Did it actually need a new processor/RAM/fan? What was wrong with it that you left it in, in the first place?

Yeah but what I was trying to say was that sometimes in that list, it will appear as a Samsung, with a strange model number beside it (i.e. it doesn't remember that it actually is a Freecom branded disk) Hence I was wondering if it was possible that her hard drive was reporting that it was the wrong model.

However none of that looks very likely now!
