That is most definitely an 8GB HDD!

To clarify, there are two types of 'drive' in your computer: the hard disk drive (HDD) and the optical disc drive (CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD-ROM/DVD±RW). If you provide the model number of your HDD, we can tell you its maximum storage capacity.
how do i get the model number of the HHD?

I am leaving for work shortly so wont be back on till late tonight but thank you all so much for helping me to understand what is happening I will go to the computer shop tomorrow

so the drive i had in it before was probably a bigger drive? as the computer is about 3 or 4 years old? I had microsft office and few other large programs on it and it never showed up low disk space and yet now I cant load these programs on it due to not enough disk space!

Almost certainly. Here's a snippet from Wikipedia's History of hard disk drives article:
    • 2002 - 137 GB addressing space barrier broken
    • 2003 - Serial ATA introduced
    • 2005 - First 500 GB hard drive shipping (Hitachi GST)

Thanks everyone for your replies, i feel confident now to talk to the shop tomorrow as the last time he fobbed me off by saying its my disk nothing to do with the hard drive... with all of your replies I now have a better understanding of computer drives... i went up and checked my ds computer using the instructions here and nearly passed out that his is 500gb so 8GB is definetly way too tiny!

  • thanks... i looked at disk management and it is saying i have 11% free

they told me it would be better for me to put in a new hard drive than buy an new computer! I will go down there tomorrow... ihave the cd they gave me for the hard drive will look for it and see what it says

To be honest, you'd have been better off getting a new computer. You could have got at least the same spec of a computer for about twice what you paid for the new hard drive. I'm sorry to see that there is a cowboy shop operating in Northern Ireland - they need to be closed down if they've only put an 8GB hard drive in. That wouldn't even run my copy of windows XP with all the updates installed.

That is what I had said when they told me my hard drive was knackered as I have a good 21 inch screen and thought i be better going for a new one and they said it be half the price i believed them! cos the shop has has been there for years in Bangor

  • Well I'll wait until they explain themselves before I pass any further judgement! Mistakes do happen at times, although this would be a pretty stupid mistake to make!
