Hi, Ive considered a mooncup before but never got round to buying one. All the raving reviews on here have inspired me, so ive just ordered one! Just wondering what you do if you're out and it needs emptying? In public toilets it would be a little embarrassing to have to come out of the cubicle to rinse it and then go back in! Even worse if there were a queue and you had to then join the end of the queue to get back in a cubicle to re-insert the mooncup!! I bet its quite satisfying to see how much its collected at the end of the day!

I've never had to change mine 'in public', cos you can leave it in for so much longer without worrying and cos its much more comfortable, I just leave it where it is til I get home.

    WOW!

What a find the mooncup is! :D

I was feeling very guilty for a long time using tampons and horrid towels (not just for the fact they pollute the ocean, but that their ingredients are still tested on animals repeatedly for each new super-duper-tampon!).

Then I came here and read about the mooncup. I ordered the small size and when I got it, I have to admit, I was initially a bit frightened of it because I didn't think it could be comfortable. I didn't even think I would be able to properly put it in place!

I was pleasantly surprised, and now I don't have to feel guilty about how many tampons I'm putting into the ocean because I'll never go back to them now. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction!! :)

To anyone who is thinking of trying a mooncup - go buy one now!
You won't be disappointed. It's not that hard to clean it out and re-insert it when you're out. I was on holiday with mine and managed just fine. I took a bottle of water with me in my bag for rinsing it out, and just put it back in. No problem at all. I don't see how it's any harder than having to squat down or get into whatever position you do for putting in another tampon, then having to make sure you're in a cubicle that is supplied with a tampon disposal bin, etc.
  • To anyone who is still unsure about buying a mooncup, don't worry - these things are fantastic. An excellent money-saver and actually a lot more convenient and user-friendly than more "conventional" methods. I got my first one with my staff discount on boots.com and then I found one in one of the staff shops at head office for a pound! (with staff discount on top of that as well!). Bonus! To the people saying to store them in a box, I wouldn't recommend that as there is no airflow and if there are any germs in there and you're putting it in a warm room, it's a perfect breeding ground. I sterilise mine (in pan of boiling water) straight after my period is over, and then I do it again a day or two before I'm due. I store it in the provided cotton bag on my dresser. My boyfriend isn't squeamish about seeing me boiling it on the stove either - for anyone who's worried what their man might think - just advise them to step aside as you're money saving! they could buy a beer with the money you'll save per month over time!

Only found this thread today but am very interested in one of these - think I'm going to go and have a scout around in boots after work as I'm due next week and also going on holiday so would be handy not to have to worry about tampax etc (especially during a 7 hour flight!)

Just remembered I have a £10 pigsback Boots voucher! yay! will be even cheaper!
Never regret anything....'cos at one time it was exactly what you wanted...

I have had one for 2 years. The only trouble was the "big" size (for women over 30 or with kids) was too big and felt uncomfortable! So at nearly 33 with 2 children, Mooncup swapped it for free with the smaller size and that one has been fine so far.

  • I'm pleased that so many women have got on so well with their mooncup but my experience has been far from happy. I originally bought it thinking it would be ideal to take away on holiday and luckily I tried it out first. Mine leaks continually ( so I have to use pads as well) and I have yet to contrive a method that doesn't require 3 hands if you're in a public loo. I've persevered for a year but am going to give up now as it's too much like hard work and not a bit green for me ( more washing and having to buy pads). Can only assume I'm badly designed since in the past I've had far more success using both natural sponges and a dutch cap. Good luck to everyone that's giving it a go.

How about washable pads instead, if the mooncup isn't for you? Big discussion on them HERE :)

Love my mooncup. So much happier dealing with my period using it. Hated inserting and taking out tampons. Hated the constant changing of towels and discomfort.

BTW, if you do dislodge your mooncup while doing a number 2, you can just poke it back into position without any worry.

The best thing I find about my mooncup is that I can use it on ultra light days, the sort when I would be worried about using a tampon. Arrgh, pulling out a dry tampon hurts! No trouble with a mooncup as it doesn't dry you out.

I have trimmed my stalk right back to a minimum. You don't need it to pull it out. Much more comfy.

I didn't have time to read the thread, so sorry if these points have already been raised. x

I love my mooncup! Am on my 2nd month of using it, and only wish that I hadn't reached the age of 42 to discover it. Feel really annoyed about all the tampons and towels I have discarded over the years.

Re the above quote; I do have a bit of a problem with the mooncup dislodging while doing a number 2! The first time I tried, the mooncup shot out at some speed and took some catching! I'm not sure if this means my pelvic floor muscles are ruined, or perhaps super strong (rather makes me think of Phoenix Nights and the ping pong ball lady!) So, a bit of practise needed I think. Sorry for the rather graphic image this may conjure up.

Mooncups are great! No more wasting money on tampons!
