I have a Honda Jazz. It is 6 years old. I have done 26000 miles in it. It has always been serviced by the Honda dealer. We have noticed a noise when driving off, & the service engineer knew immediately what the problem was, as soon we drove off in the car. He said he's had a few Jazz cars in, with the same problem before, & that the gearbox needs some gears replacing at a rough cost of £800-00. Neither the Honda dealer nor Honda will offer any assistance at all in this matter. Do you think it is right that a car gearbox should have a major rebuild after 26000 miles? Remember that Honda cars are quite often more expensive than a lot of others, trading on there 'so called Reliability'. I really am not happy about paying out on a major Gearbox repair when, although the car is outside of the Guarantee, it has only done 26000 miles.
Nice to save.

No probably not; but it is not that young a car so not too much you can do except showing your displeasure when you come to replace it.

It could feasibly be argued it is how the car has been driven that has caused the problem.

Some with more knowledge will want to know what type of gearbox it is and might be able to help you more fully.

The car has been driven in exactly the same way as my 30 odd other,' New & Nearly new' cars have been driven. They never had a hint of a problem, some with many more miles than this one. No it's not the way it is driven.

with 26,000 miles on it,does this mean that its only first and second that worn?
if the whine isnt too bad then put up with it until the gearbox gives in, theres a good chance it wont give in for many years to come, its probably only a noisy bearing.

if it really causes him so much heart ache then get it repaired,i doubt honda or any other manufacturer would offer warranty on this.

funnily enough, we also have a honda jazz, a 53 plate. its done a larger milage than yours, but we've been told its in need of the same repair.
  • Any idea what gearbox it actually is? Which engine is it attached to?

Honda gearboxes are usually pretty simple inside and reliability follows from the simplicity. I've taken one apart on my patio so it can't be that hard. £800 sounds alot. There are Jazz gearboxes on ebay for less than £200 and it shouldn't be more than £300 to swap including a new clutch while they're at it.

What I'd probably do, is research what gearbox it has and source another off ebay that will fit (even if the ratios are wrong), get it fitted by a garage and take my chances.

I tried asking but to no avail.
  • Even what engine size would do. It'll be a D-series engine of some sort.

"If your Civic or Jazz gearbox is making noises, and you are unsure what it could be, please read on. f the noise occurs when it is in neutral and in the lower gears but stops when you press the clutch in, it is most certainly the input shaft bearing that needs replacing (an expensive gearbox rebuild"

Sorry could not reply as now in Spain for a few weeks. The Engine is a 1400 SE, if that helps.
