Most public sector workers are only there for a few years. Not many get the full 40 years, make it to "Sir Humphry" level & retire on a £60k+ pension0

It was you that used the word promoted...........why.........if it wasn't promotion?
Well done on not giving up, but why were you knocking on doors for a job with a salary you consider to be so low?
Kriss, can you not see it is you that is creating the luck you refer to?
Er the first line of the post asks the likelyhood, the remainder of the post is clearly informal and matter of factly. Note the use of 'pfft' and quip about overpaid council workers.
I used the word 'promoted' because at the time I didnt expect it to be construed by yourself as something sinister and unjust. I was essentially promoted in the sense that I stayed within the same service but applied for a more senior post.
The salary was advertised as being something like 13K - 22K. It was a slight pay rise at least and a permenant contract so I took it. I didnt realise at the time just how lengthy it would be to actually get to the 22K but regardless of that Ive always looked at the bigger picture which is work my way up.
 Apology accepted though.0

How likely is that they will freeze our pays?
Im pretty sick of the luck Ive had in my local council. When I joined 3 years ago there was a freeze on pay due to restructuring. I got a £30 pay rise that year.
When I was finally promoted I was told I was stuck at the bottom of my scale until I completed an HNC in Civils as my degree wasnt relevant enough.
Now as Im nearing the end of the HNC I hear they are looking to freeze me for a further 4 years. pfft.
26 years old and even without the pay freeze it will take me 11 years to get to the top of my scale which is only 22 grand. Who says us council workers are overpaid?!?!?!
I started working working full time just under 4 years ago. I am now earning 50% more than I was when I started. This is because I moved around jobs, gained additional qualifications and moved companies when they stopped paying me the market rate for my skills. I highly recommend doing something similar if you feel underpaid.
If you sit around in the same job doing the same thing day in day out waiting for promotions and big pay rises to happen you will be there a long time - and rightly so.0

:rotfl::rotfl: I know where you are coming from. To be honest it is an excuse to whittle staff numbers down as someone has been made redundant or pushed into early retirement every time.
The worker I know is convinced the whole dept will be subcontracted, this has already happened in other public sectors and indeed other councils across the company. He could get more salary in the private sector, but stayed because of the flexable working hours, good time off decent (all be it not FREE) pension and because they were prepared to pay for him to do training courses/qualifications and he did have some loyalty because of this. But he did previously work for one of these type of companies that cover service contracts like this and has decided to go back into private industry as the money is so much more, although it is a tougher atmosphere.

Actually I went and had a look and sure enough you were winding them up in discussion 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. It was 1/80th salary per year of paying for it, now 1/60th but they knock a big chunk off for anyone that doesn't work to 65.0

I was embarrassed enough when you spotted me in the MoneySavers.
I saw you there but I was too polite to tell you you'd been seen. Its a bit like when one sees a neighbour in lidl. Those headscrafed, prestige car/LR driver flower arraging rotas at the church women can really leg it round the one way lidly aisle system if they are scared of being spotted. We don't shop at lidl but DH has been known to go in to sare the neighbours occasionally:o:rolleyes: 0 Its a bit like when one sees a neighbour in lidl. I agree entirely and I would have otherwise considered moving to the private sector but for the state of the economy.
I was on 13K when I left uni! Im doing a bit better now but its still frustrating when you think that all your mates that left school immediately and got trades have been clearing 25K for a number of years now.
Im really not that fussed about my salary right now. It will just be very disapointing if they freeze our salary progressions because that will mean it will then take 15 years for me to get to the top of my scale! 15 years to earn the equivalent of 22K!0
