How likely is that they will freeze our pays?
Im pretty sick of the luck Ive had in my local council. When I joined 3 years ago there was a freeze on pay due to restructuring. I got a £30 pay rise that year.
When I was finally promoted I was told I was stuck at the bottom of my scale until I completed an HNC in Civils as my degree wasnt relevant enough.
Now as Im nearing the end of the HNC I hear they are looking to freeze me for a further 4 years. pfft.
26 years old and even without the pay freeze it will take me 11 years to get to the top of my scale which is only 22 grand. Who says us council workers are overpaid?!?!?!

Well prices are down by nearly 2% yoy so a pay freeze would put you 2% better off - not forgetting that with increased life expectancy and falling gilt yields your pension has also become a lot more costly for the rest of us to pay for.I think....0

Ahh but listen to the bulls... 22k, just below average I suspect, which means you have to quit moaning, retrain, and work hard if you ever want to fulfil that dream of owning a slumbox. :T
Failing that just live the dream and do what the majority have been doing for the last 6 years and take out a liar loan. Come on you know you want to bail out the over-leveraged indebted bulls. :rotfl:0

Be thankful if you have a fairly secure job and a pension scheme. The private sector has borne the brunt so far.
The more pain will all share the quicker the situation will improve.0

Nobody is stopping you for going to get a job in the private sector.
In fact with the councils I know you are lucky to be employed directly by the council as a permanent employee.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

A public sector worker complaining about pay levels, is always going to spell trouble on these forums.
I remember Sir Humphrey asking whether his job should be axed.Favourite hobbies: Watersports. Relaxing in Coffee Shop. Investing in stocks.

instead of throwing money down the drain by renting.

Tell me.Not brainwashed, just sensible. By renting all you're doing is paying your landlords mortgage for them whilst giving them a little extra cash in their pockets to boot. Who is the brainwashed one now huh!
Is it better to own a property and pay £500 a month in mortgage interest or to rent s similar property and pay £500 a month rent?0

 Depends on your meduim-term plans.
If you plan to stay in the property for at least 10 years, then £500 a month in mortgage interest would be the better option, IMO.0

Neither: it's better to take control of your own life rather than moaning about how those you let control it see fit to treat it.........kriss boy it's your choice!0

I think that public sector workers are an easy target, especially for many in the private sector.
There are good & bad in all forms of employment. Private sector has many layabout wasters. In the same way, I'm sure there are lead swingers in the public sector.
In downturns, private sector people feel the pressure, see cuts made by their solely profit orientated business', & then start to shout about the fact their taxes should be cut, & therefore public sector employees should bear the brunt and be made redundant. Many stereotypes then tend to be trotted out.
Thing is, whilst I'll accept there is waste/inefficiencies in public spending, the vast majority of roles are there to serve a purpose, and that purpose is not the creation of wealth. I've said it before, they provide essential services, usually to the vulnerable. Those services will see increased demand the longer this downturn goes on. Simple example, the increased numbers of people using jobcentres.
Personally, I feel a great majority of public sector employees are undervalued (not neccessarily underpaid). There appears to be a general acknowledgement that though the pay may be less than in public sector, some of the T&C's offset this.
I'd also recommend the OP consider issues other than just pay. You spend 48 weeks a year at work. Surely it is about more than how much you get at the end of the week/month. Get some satisfaction out of your work. Enjoy the security you have (compared to many others right now). Enjoy time with friends and families, and be happy for the fact that you can afford it, as you are in gainful employment. Take advantage of the training opportunities which come your way, better yourself, and an improved role (with improved remuneration) may become accessable to you.
ETA: at the same time, be realistic about the likelihood of recieving massive pay increases at the current time. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
