Council Pay Freeze

The equivalent job in the private sector for a roads company would be around 25K.
So to have to wait 11 years to get 22K is a bit annoying. I can work my way up via promotion but that too will take a fair bit of time. Its more annoying that my degree wasnt deemed relevant although I disagree.
The terms and conditions are the only reason I will remain with the council, that and the economy right now.
I can assure some of you we are not all overpaid layabouts! The council seem quite generous to manual staff but in general Id say the rest of us are paid below average for our jobs.
Put it this way, If I had left school with no qualifications and become a grass cutter Id be on a lot more money, with a better pension and more money in the bank. Sure having been to uni Im likely to earn more than a grass cutter in time but throughout the entirity of a career Im not convinced overall you are better off not just leaving school immediately if you want to work for the council.
Make up your mind and stop whinging..........go get a job cutting the bl00dy grass then!
God, if it wasn't for councils guys' like you would struggle to find a job.
Stop looking outward for the reasons you are in the current situation and start looking inwards.0 -
Council pay freezes are correct.
Millions unemployed and even more have pay freezes in the private sector.
I think you are also forgetting the FREE pension you will be getting if you stay there.
No-one seems to take this into account though do they?0 -
So go and work for them and stop moaning about how hard done by you are.
Get a grip.
Im merely saying Im concerned that there will be a pay freeze which is salt in the wounds for someone like me who hasnt had any luck with the 'system' so far.
Ive said that we are underpaid compared to the private sector but the terms and conditions are enough to keep me happy at the moment.
This is a discussion board you know... I am entitled to post my thoughts on a particular issue...0 -

A blanket freeze isnt fair at all.
People at the top of their scales getting paid more than others wont be effected at all. Then people like me who have invested in their eduction and went to uni, only to be told they need a mickey mouse HNC will have a further 4 years to wait to eventually get the same wage as their colleagues.
Its not as simple as just freezing everyones wage.0 -

If I was to spend a hundred years looking for a single post that typified the public sector mentality - and all the negative connotations that go with it - I couldnt have found one better.
It's all there. Whinging, complaining, griping, an overwhelming sense that they are misunderstood and undervalued, and all of it overlain with a massive fear that they just couldn't cut it - or face the harsh realities of life - working in the private sector.
Put it this way pal. The job security and pension are the system's way of keeping non-productive whiners out of the private sector, the role of which is to take risks in efforts to stimulate and grow the economy.
You're best off staying where you are. We all win that way.0 -

It aint fair. It aint fair. It aint fair . . . They're not treating me how I deserve. I have a degree yada yada yada. Blah blah blah.
First - use your degree to understand the difference between effect and affect.
Second - go and make your way in the real world and see how you get on.0 -

Really? Because when I re-read my post I just see it as someone saying they appreciate their job security, the terms and conditions (ie. Pension) but are frustrated that they are denied the same salary as others in their team because they dont have an HNC that is micky mouse compared to their degree.
Its really that straight forward. Theres nothing whingy about it. Infact its the first time Ive ever discussed my job and Ive been a member here for many years.0 -

Kriss, what is it with you?
a) you chose to move to the council
b) you knew you had a degree (although the way you are going on I wonder what it's in)
c) you knew the pay & conditions prior to taking the job
d) you know there are alternatives
e) I am sure you are able to write a letter of resignation
Did you think a degree is a ticket to riches?
Did you believe you didn't need to put in effort post degree?
Do you really not understand you have chosen to be where you are, doing what you do and being part of the 'system' you refer to?
Honest, it doesn't have to be this way!0 -

What is your degree in?
Isn't the the HNC a much more practical qualification?0 -

Heh, I joined the council because the terms and conditions are worth a lot. I work close to home and the hours are flexible which suits the other commitments I have in life.
Im just saying Im worried they freeze the salary progression for 4 years.
If people want to jump on the post and use it as an excuse to slag us council workers off them fine, it really doesnt bother me.
Read my posts again, Im simply saying it would suck if they froze my salary as I was led to believe I would be on a decent salary upon completing an HNC relevant to the job.0
