Do you have a big car? Are you a bully?

I'd have to agree with the OP that there is a section of drivers who will intimidate a smaller car, but not one they perceive as 'big'. I drive a BMW and I've noticed that there are drivers who will hang back at a sensible distance from my car on the motorway, but after passing me will tailgate the Focus, Corsa or whatever further up the road until it moves out the way.
It also seems to me BMW drivers are being unfairly picked out - I've experienced aggressive driving from people in all makes of car, and no particular brand stands out. I'm certain the person behind me on Friday getting upset at my doing 30 in a 30 zone wasn't driving a BMW Escort!0 -
If you did this on the M40 on a Friday afternoon then you have half a mile worth of "plonkers" behind you. Please check your mirrors because you could really wind people up who wish to drive at a more realistic motorway speed.
Good, if my speedo reads 70 mph, that is my maximum speed, if others want to break the speed limit, that is their problem not mine.
If I am overtaking legally, then they will just have to wait.0 -

how do you know you are doing 70 and no more? I would rather carry out the overtake then checking my speed didnt go to 71 or 72 -
Any police around would allow for a realistic use of speed rather than sticking religiously to the speed limit.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -

I go by what my speedo reads, that is why we have speedos, if others want to flout the law, that is up to them, it is their problem, not mine.
Show me a documented statement from the police about your last paragraph, then I may well consider the matter, until then I will stay within the law.0 -
And anybody who thinks that you are inconsiderate if you are not doing 70+ in the outside lane is a (insert banned word of choice).because you could really wind people up who wish to drive at a more realistic motorway speed.tomstickland wrote: »Seeing that you can easily travel along a mway at 80 indicated and never be bothered by police then I suggest that when busy you use this sort of speed to overtake. 80 indicated will be around 75mph real speed.
We have some winners.0 -

But that's my point, your speedo days 70 but you could in reality be doing just over 60. If you sit in the outside lane taking all day to overtake you are holding traffic up even if they arent breaking the law.
As I said before, I drive many cars big and small and rarely have a problem. If you are getting a lot of tailgaters your driving is probably half the problem.0 -

One wagon over taking another causes lane 2 to slow down suddenly, lane 3 becomes slower, people brake which makes a slow moving clump of vehicles for the next 3 miles or so
Taking off the limiters would help sort this problem out. As Goldie will know on the M8 around Eurocentral can be carnage with HGV's trying to use that 1mph anomoly to overtake other HGVs.
The other thing to consider is that driving too slowly could be seen as impeding the flow of traffic and the miscreant could be charged with careless driving.0 -
I have a big car but don't bully anyone, no point, if someone is holding me up, I simply wait patiently until the opportunity arises to safely blat past them.
As for those idiots who try to enforce the speed limits on other road users, leave that job to the police0 -
DH has a BMW 5 series and always drives in the BMW (outside) lane of motorways. He doesn't drive aggressively as such - he just maintains it's performance is badly affected if there are vehicles in front of it
My son's 18 year old friends belt around on 2 wheels of their nasty Saxos until they encounter dry-stone walls jumping out on them. Quite a common problem with those models up here in Derbyshire
I drive a Fiat Punto which came with factory-fitted invisibility cloak. No-one EVER lets me out a junctions :mad:0
