More likely to be the well established sense of relief that a quick injection of nicotine brings, soothing that "tired and irritable (angry, impatient, nervous)" feeling that's associated with nicotine withdrawal:
http://healthliteracy.worlded.org/docs/tobacco/Unit4/2cycle_of_add.html
This cycle of nicotine withdrawal>stress>nicotine intake>stress relief>nicotine withdrawal is of course a catch 22, the nicotine is needed to relieve the stress of withdrawal which is caused by not smoking which is relieved by smoking again etc etc.
If you don't smoke, you're actually far more likely to suffer less from stress:

You could always try preaching to people that give a monkies about your preaching :T
I smoke and pollute the air around me.
You talk out of your rectum and pollute sense and promote boredom.0 -

I may not be welcome here but i have to say that smoking in anyone under the age of at least 40 has no reason to smoke, as the effects of it have been known for at least that long!
I think its disgraceful that people smoke in the house/car when children are present.
Do everyone a favour and stop poisoning them! Especially as they are then considerably more likely to be smokers themselves.
My mum always smoked at home, i hated going to school smelling like an ashtray and having it commented on, and no, i don't smoke. Never have, never will
Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

Not preaching, just relaying factual, accepted knowledge.
Feel free not to comment on them and just insult me, if you find that easier.0 -
I see all sides of this argument, i smoke (but only when im at the pub) i dont smoke on a day to day basis so dont always class myself as 'a smoker', Ive worked in a pub both before and after the smoking ban so have seen the changes its made to a traditional pub and i also have children.
For me in the pub as a customer i have made friends with the outcasts outside where we wouldnt have struck up a conversation before, but inside has suffered as non-smokers seem a miserable bunch and sit at the tables on their own !
i enjoy smoking (richmond menthol too but its gotta be a superking
) and see it as one of the few treats i allow myself that are bad for me, also on that list is ben and jerry's phish food, macdonald's big mac large fries, vodka and diet coke and a full english fry up. I have them, just once in a while and not all at once.
Its all about moderation, everything in life could kill you - doesnt mean you stop living till it does !

It's very easy to find out if that's the case.
Stop smoking, completely, for 8 weeks. If you're able to do this without increased cravings, mood swings, irritability, sleeplessness or tiredness, then it's pretty safe to say you're immune to the effects of nicotine.0 -
lloking at volcanos chart it could be argued that we smoke because we are not very happy or satisfied with life
DONT LYNCH ME - ITS JUST MY OPINION0 -
Volcano, you're trying to talk some sense in to the yellow-toothed, sticky, stinking fools, but they are obviously so into their addiction that they won't listen to reason.
It's hard for many smokers to admit the real reason why they smoke and hence inflict their filthy habit upon others, which is that they are addicted; facing their addiction would mean acknowledging that they are weak minded and not in control of themselves.
It's better for them if they pretend to smoke because they want to, because they enjoy it, and then arrogantly defend their filthy habit. It makes them feel better about themselves, draws attention away from the real reason they do it, and makes them think they're not the dirty drug addicts that they are.
Much love,
