Perhaps you should look at a wide spectrum of the evidence instead of only those bits you agree with.

Can you provide some of this evidence to back your assertion that :
The health hazards of smoking - or even what is called 'passive smoking' - are NOT proved.

You did go awfully quiet for a while?

'Native Americans smoke much more than white Americans, yet have half the rate of lung cancer.

Of course they do! They have a life expectancy of 58 years. As most lung cancers don't occur until you're 70-75, most native americans are dead well before then!

The Greeks, Japanese, Italians and Spaniards are the world's heaviest smokers,

    What rubbish! They are 19th, 44th, 72nd and 42nd respectively. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_tob_tot_adu_smo-health-tobacco-total-adult-smokers
Japanese have especially low rates of lung cancer - though these have risen over the last couple of decades at the same time as smoking has declined.

Japan (with the longest life expectancy of any other country) is indeed a well recognised paradox that has plenty of explanations: http://lungcancer.about.com/od/causesoflungcance1/f/lungcaparadox.htm
I'd think one of the least likely explanations would be "Japan is the norm, the rest of the world is just 'unlucky'!"
Meanwhile, Chinese women have one of the highest in the world even though only 2% of them smoke.

Again, pick an extreme situation and try and extrapolate it to the rest of the world . In the UK, tobacco causes around 85% of all lung cancer. In a population that doesn't smoke so much, but stir frys nearly all its food and doesn't have fancy extraction hoods, the cause is something else: http://cebp.aacrjournals.org/cgi/content/full/9/11/1215

Hint: A washed up pop singer is probably not going to be a prime source of high quality, medical 'facts'.

Well said Volcano! Great to see intelligent comments on this thread.

There's nothing worse than comments like "Well my gran lived till she was 105 and smoked all her days" - which merely highlight the ignorance of the writer.

In their own home/garden/car in an open space away from others ?

Why are ex smokers so self-righteous on this subject ? because its only when you stop that you realise the truth

    1) Its killing you
    2) Its killing others
    3) Its expensive
    4) Its anti social
    6) MOST IMPORTANT it's selfish your either ending your life early, affecting your loved ones, receiving help draining resources & NHS for self inflicted illness or causing others to share your pleasure

It aint rocket science i'm ashamed it took me 24 years to realise it
I hope & pray it never comes back to bite me,cancer is one hell of a price to pay for ignorance

So is suicide. So is self harm. Some people smoke as a coping mechanism. Some people don't care if it kills them. :(

Our next door neighbour is a heavy smoker he keeps us awake alot of the time with his smokers cough as his bedroom backs onto ours and we have thin walls, at times it is so loud happens every night i have to get up as it continues for ages, plus he also smokes outside due to having children, and his wife doesnt smoke however his patio area and our patio area are next to each other having a 6 ft fence between but when i want to open my french doors i have a massive whiff of his cigarette smoke weekends i can rarely have my doors open due to his smoke coming in my house, the dog doesnt appreciate it either who sleeps by the doors, why on earth should i have to put up with this why cant smokers have a garden shed where they can smoke. As I speak i got up early so i could have my doors open before he subjected me to his vile stench and now have to close them as he is out smoking now and i am 50 feet from the doors on the computer and the smell is wafting in. What are we supposed to do keep all our windows and door shut - I dont have the problem of bonfire smoke where i live as no one ever lights one.
    Re: the bold bits...
"the dog doesnt appreciate it either"
how does the dog show his/her disapproval?

"why cant smokers have a garden shed where they can smoke."
They can. I have not yet come across any legislation that suggests that they can't.

Smokers KNOW what the risks are, just like alcohol, fizzy drinks and fatty food, they have a choice to make, and take the risk.

Which is LEGALLY their own entitlement, similar to taking the risk of driving a car, which can kill far more dramatically than a cigarette, and STATISTICALLY a lot more innocent victims than themselves, it is in effect, the choices people make.

Imagine how a casino would look, if they banned indoor drinking on the grounds it may encourage gambling. Drinking outdoor alcohol for example was successfully banned for just as obvious reasons as indoor smoking.

Banning outdoor AND indoor smoking, would be as effective as banning indoor and outdoor drinking gatherings, as well as all other indoor or outdoor hazardous pollutants.

Outdoor smoking bans are already in place in many parts of the world:

    For LA:
In addition to the state ban on smoking in restaurants, bars and other workplaces, smoking is prohibited on city beaches, in farmers markets and within 25 feet of playgrounds, bleachers, sport courts, fields and picnic areas.

There's plenty of other places like this in the US, and it could be like this in the UK very soon: http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/110658/Ban-on-outdoor-smoking

But until such laws are introduced into the UK, it will remain acceptable, on kerbs, roads, country lanes, and walkways. Where pollution levels are no different to the exhaust levels of combustion engines, that emit a far higher level of hazardous pollutant, than any cigarette could manage to do.

  • Why should smokers be moaned at when smoking outside the non smokers got what they wanted. Smokers outside.

Non smokers cannot have it all ways and some of them are even jumping on the Eco bandwagon worrying about the enviroment sure cigarette ends should be disposed of correctly but smokers dont need the hassel of moans especially hypocrits who used to do it.

If they choose to smoke then thats fine.

What about idiots who playin music from the mobile phone aloud while walking in the street, Ever heard of headphones. F*cking Ban them.

Its not reallyu that bad... theres no smoking in public places so its easy to avoid.

I'm not sure where you live but I wish I lived there. The minute I get outside after work or at lunchtime there are people around smoking. I think it's rude and inconsiderate to smoke in public places.
