I've always said 3 years is my limit on how long I would be with someone unmarried. If someone doesn't know me by then, they're never going to get me, we'll never fit exactly right, and I'm going to spend my life trying to rub the edges of a square peg.

I think this is a great way to view things and reading this thread has made me realise that I was right to leave my ex-partner. We'd been together for 2 years, living together for one and not once did he tell me he loved me.

We're still very good friends and we still live together almost a year on but I know that he isn't "the one" and although we make a good team and have a good life the spark just isn't there. So I'm still waiting for the right person to come along. Interesting to see that a lot of "whirlwind" romances seem to be the ones lasting the longest.

    3 weeks for me :D

Met hubby in July 2001, engaged August 2001, married August 2002. I was 21 when we met and he was 38. We've now got two kids and are still going strong.

My Aunt can beat me though - she'd known her husband about 3 days when he proposed...

I find it really strange to hear of people together for years before getting engaged/married. This is however probably because we didn't live together before getting married and indeed hadn't lived with anyone else either!

Got engaged six months after we started going out and married a year to the day later. That was twenty two years ago.

The journey of getting to know each other has been fantastic and though times have often been hard with difficulties he is my soulmate and I wouldn't be without him. :j:j
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

this is a question for the guys who have been with their OH for let's say more than 3 years and not engaged.....what is stopping you from proposing? I am not having a pop at anyone, this is just comething I wonder aboout.

    Happy to answer.

I've been with my girlfriend just shy of 3 years and marriage isn't on the cards for at least another 3 years yet. I find it really strange and foreign when people get engaged quickly, Im sure it works for some people but I really wouldn't consider proposing within a year, no matter how perfect it seemed. Every relationship seems perfect to start with, it takes a while for the cracks to appear, although if your already married I do think your more likely to work through your problems. I'd rather just have a relationship that worked though and it takes a while to work that out in my opinion.

It also may be partly due to my age as Im 23, I think the older you are the quicker your likely to get married. I also find someone getting married at my age a little strange too.

However, I'm not gonna have children with my girlfriend either and I think that may also play a big part in your decision. Most people would want kids inside of marriage and this may lead to a quicker marriage to have the children sooner. If I wanted children I'd be willing to get married sooner.
  • Met online in August 1998, discovered he lived in US.
Hopped on plane 10 weeks later. Had to meet this man!
Got married after 10 days of meeting in person (would have been 5 days but we had to have blood tests done to get married).
Been blissfully married for nearly 11 years now.
This was way before internet relationships were the norm. We could have made a fortune with magazine articles & been on TV loads of times, had we had the inclination to do so - we didn't!
If it feels totally right - then do it!
  • I met my hubby on a bilind date, moved in with him 2 weeks later, 6 weeks later we got in engaged, and married 7moths after our first date!

I was with my ex-partner for 7 years and never really had the urge to marry him - thank god!

But as soon as I met my hubby I just knew we were meant to be together!
