We were together for a week before getting engaged. Got married 3 months later. Still happily married 17 years later - not that it's always been easy! :D

  • We met in the February and were engaged 3 months later. Married 9 mnoths after that - and that was 6b years ago now.

I guess in hindfsight it looks a little quick, but when you meet "the right one" and you're sure - why wait ?

    Because everyone is different!!

You think 'why wait?', I think, if it's right, 'why bother?'

Same here! And now he hasn't asked me I think if he does ask me now its cos me and my daughter have "hasseled" him into it, so it wouldnt feel right. Its also horrible to think Im 29 and still no one wants to marry me even though we have a child together.
From what Ive made out on this thread, seems everyone does it pretty quickly, so I've defo missed the boat! :(

We knew we were going to do it eventually, and my grandmother was 93 and starting to fade so we decided to do it sooner rather than later. She passed away six weeks after the wedding, so we got there just in time.

That and the public gesture of, I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you and let's make it official, was as important to us as the private knowledge that that was the plan.

Why can people who are married never appreciate why unmarried couples don't want to do it?

I can appreciate why you did it, no need to justify it. But some people just don't want to, it's not weird, it's just different to you.

I don't think people are weird and wrong for not getting married - you asked why people bother and I answered.

My best friend and her partner have been together for 15 years and have no desire to get married. I don't consider them any less committed than my husband and I - they have a mortgage, a dog and a deep love and respect for each other and it makes me happy to see how happy they are together.

I hadn't expected to get married, and until I met my husband had been strenuously avoiding it through three marriage proposals and two serious partners. Once it was right it was right, but that's not how it is for everyone. It doesn't make either choice wrong or weird - you just do what works for you.

Ah, I think you misunderstood my post. That was just my opinion. Hers/yours is 'why wait?' and mine is 'why bother?'

I don't much care about why people bother! I like going to weddings as I get free food.

I hate going to weddings. Ours was an exception - because I organised it I was allowed to cut out all the bits I don't like.

I do like free food though.
