How long were you together before getting Engaged?

Just a general question really

I have some friends who got engaged after 2yrs, some after a yr, some after 5 years.

Just wondered?

I've always thought after a year to be a bit quick!!

    5 months!!!!

and here we are still married after 12 years! It was funny because I split from a guy the week before I met my husband, and that was because he was too clingy and I didn't want to get too attached to anyone, I had never dated anyone for more than a couple of months before dh and was the same as you thinking how can anyone get engaged/married after only a few months

But then I met dh and we were discussing marriage etc after about 4 weeks together, I guess we just felt it was right. We got engaged after 5 months, bought our first home together after a year and married 18 months after that

  • I met Hubby in Oct 06......engaged April 07....married Oct 07.

So met, got engaged and married within a year.

My brother was with his wife for 13 years before they got engaged, then another 2 years befor they married.
  • We'd been together just over 2 and a half years when we got engaged and we got married a couple of months before our fourth anniversary. We moved in together after just over a year together.

I think it depends on lots of things, your age especially, getting engaged after a year at 20 is very fast but at 35 perhaps not so.

We talked about marriage before moving in together, I didn't want to live with someone unless that was the plan. It had to be a serious relationship with a view to getting married. I suppose we could have got engaged then but I think that if you are engaged you should be planning to marry not just thinking about it.

If he'd asked me to marry him after a year I would have thought it was a bit quick, and to be honest if we would have had to have got a mortgage together or sell a house to move in together I think I would have waited a bit longer. We were lucky that our situation made it easy to "try out" living together.

By our second anniversary I definitely would have said yes if he'd asked!

But it all depends, I have friends who got married quickly and others who took ages or still haven't married. At our wedding a cousin's husband congratulated my DH with the words "well done it took me 18 years!".

I think the main thing is to get things in the right order (marriage before babies ideally) and to do things for the right reasons.
