I have just been to buy some carpet for the stairs and landing, with my ex as he has a bigger car, and said he's fit it.

But, now he tells me he had no intention of actuallly fitting the thing until Saturday morning!!

I asked why the hell he'd come around tonight and let me go and buy it then and he said he thought I just wanted it ready!

Yeah, like I need a blimming great piece of carpet in my bedroom, for the monster spiders to hide behind!!!

I could cry - I've been clearing stuff out of the way for days now and had it all clear upstairs! Plus, I'd relaxed at the thought I'd have no cracks in the floorboards tonight!

So, anyway, I am off to buy a stanley knife after we've had tea and I will fit the darn thing myself!! Can't be that hard, can it? :undecided

Google is my friend, unless any of you have any advice (other than wait for him to do it!)

Should be interesting at least! I'll be back in about three days! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Oh, and I now have a plastic bag, secured with an elastic band, over the hoover tube!

I was just wondering whether anyone on here has sought treatment or help to overcome their fear? I am not scared of spiders, and reading this I feel so sorry for those who have their lives disrupted by their fear, especially to the extremes people have mentioned on here. I know that 'curing' this kind of phobia can be very succesful and I was wondering whether anyone had tried it? Apart from anything, it must be difficult not to pass something like that on to your kids, which I'm guessing nobody would want to do?
Good luck everyone - I really feel for you all!

My counsellor does EMDR and we were going to try it but I had to stop for other reasons.

I'm going to ask if we can try again though!

I will let you all know if it works!

I hate them soooo much!! I couldn't even go near one to try and kill it, the best I get is throwing things at them whilst standing on something lol. phone books usually work well!!:rotfl:

If someone put a spider down my back I think i'd have a panic attack then a nervous breakdown lol. Just reading this thread has made me paranoid and really scared :o

  • I HATE them all. I can handle the tiny tiny ones with a bit of tissue! and thats something i would never have been able to do a couple of years ago. the bigger ones well i try and cover them up with something heavy and wait till they die or if they are that big and yucky I ask a neighbour to get it for me.

Im also a fan of the bleach and polish, hairspray, vanish spray whatever is close to hand they shouldnt invade my space!

If i see one the next day or that day depending on the time i have a good good good clean round the next day even if its not that rooms day to be cleaned.

I've never been a fan of spiders...last year I worked in a British Red cross store...was running it alone on that day (manager was off) with the exception of my best friend who'd come to help...we spotted a *huge* spider on the table next to the till and both of us completely panicked. lol. Had to wait for a customer to take pity on us and remove it from the store.

This year has been the worst for spiders, though...have been traveling round the USA, and spent some time on a Cherokee reservation in North Carolina. Absolutely gorgeous place, but the house I was staying in was right on the edge of the valley, quite rustic, etc, and as such had a *lot* of spiders...I was helping the owner of the place clean it up, and oh my God it was nasty (spider wise). First of all I came across something that looked like a baby black widow (turns out it possibly was, as they do get them in that area), plus after being warned to stay out of cupboards, etc because of the blown recluse spiders (which are very poisonous), what does the owner do - send me into the cupboards to clear out.

We got into the habit of me pointing out spiders and her killing them. When she was at work and I was home alone, I used Raid spray, but it never worked quick enough. lol. The absolute worst, though, was when i saw this *massive* spider (looked like a small tarantula, very tick built, etc) crawling across the floor. I grabbed the raid and prayed the heck out of it, only to stand and watch in horror as hundreds of baby spiders ran off its back and all over the floor. It was all I could do to stop myself from screaming. lol. I swear it was like something out of a horror film. lol.

I also had an issue with a scorpion in Georgia a number of years ago. That was fun. lol.

But yeah - if you go to North Carolina, remember it's the small spiders that cause the problems...the big ones are usually apparently fine. lol.

All I can say is DONT go to Australia...and dont google golden orb spiders!!!

I'm a huge fan of the glass method, but having 10 ft high ceilings can be a pain when they are crawling about on them...

Oh my goodness who started this?! hate spiders with a passion!!

Like someone said about spraying them with deodarant - this is my speciality!! If I see one and it's relatively far away I move as slowly as I can and get something that I can spray it with - hairspray, deodarant, perfume etc...then squirt the thing until it stops moving lol... Although once I saw one at the skirting and was spraying and spraying and about 10 secs in realised I was spraying right onto a plug socket!!

OP - you're not going to like this but...you can't carry on like this. My mum was the same as you - used to call us to deal with them. So one day her BF put one down her back (sorry if this upsets you). It ran all over and then ran off her - and she was cured! Psychologists call it immersion or something. It's like ripping a band aid off - v painful but great when it's done.

:eek::eek: That'd be one ex-boyfriend then - if not one dead boyfriend!!!!!!!

It wouldn't work with me, I honestly think I'd have a heart attack :o

I have to say though, terrified as I am of the big spiders, I've howled with laughter at some of these posts, especially the one about the one so huuuuge it could have worn trainers :rotfl:

I can't understand the people who advocate putting them outside - do you not think they'll come back in again? In our house, I whack them with one of hubby's size 12s - they don't tend to walk away afterwards.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

OMG how absolutely awful. I'm sitting here with my feet 6 inches off the floor just in case :o

  • Hmm I'm doubly wierd. Outdoors I can cope, even go "ooo whassat then". I've even pulled the odd one or two out of my hair (outdoorsy volunteering / work)!

Indoors, I get palpitations then spray Raid at them and chase them until they stop twitching! I can cope with leaving the 5mm ones alone. The money spiders and zebra/wolf spiders (the black and white little jumping b*ggers) are ok.
I can't go near crane flies as I once splatted one and its legs fell off and landed on me!!!! But this summer I've improved to the point of coping if they're in the room. They don't half crash around the ceiling noisily!

I reckon it's the extra legs - I've handled hawkmoths with no problem (they're pretty cute, in a fat hairy way) and had a moth so hefty that it knocked into the light and started it swinging!

Intriguing about the conker thing though... :)
