This has made me chuckle, I am not the biggest fan of spiders at all but wouldn't say I have a phobia of them. My house is fairly new so I don't get that many but last night I was watching tv with the lights off and I noticed something move, after putting the lights on I saw it was a humongus beast of a spider...........I swear it was that big it could have worn trainers!!!! I phoned oh in a bit of a panic as I belived it wasn't from this country it was that big. I used a pint glass and card for that one as I am not a fan of killing them.
Also I always take a drink of water to bed with me and one warm night a few weeks ago I was up about 4am, went to get a drink of my water and there was a shadow in it........yep it was another beast what had crawled in there and I was so close to drinking it too, yak!!
I suppose this doesn't really help whatsoever but is it me or do the the bugg*rs get bigger every year?!DFW AND OS'ER IN TRAINING!!:D
Oh and bump due 3rd Dec 09' mummy to be for the first time :T0 -
That's what dd1 does normally, but even she is afraid of these beasties! She may be persuaded for money though...
No way could I get that close, and even if I could, I wouldn't be able to use a clear container!
DD2 (she has just read this) says she will only catch them with the vacuum cleaner!
We are clearing the computer room now and I've got three charity shop bags put into a bigger black sack and sealed, as I cannot take them in the car when there may be things lurking!
DD2 is 'helping' and has just been in fits of laughter as I was vacuuming around a box when it caught a bit of the plastic bag inside and frightened me!
Chinkle - are you saying they will be having babies in my house...?:eek::eek:
I know it's daft but I can't help it! I am so scared it's ridiculous!
I once started doing some EMDR with my counsellor, to try and deal with this, but had to stop for another reason - I think I may ask if we can try again!
Hey, same here... just the other day, when I wa athome, relaxing and happy, queen of my castle, ine with a huge head headed towards me!! I sprayed it with my OH's deodorant, but it ran away behind the sofa... went around the room and them disappeared under the door... to re-appear yesterday. My partner uses the paper/pint class method and it works a treat, although I can't bring myself to do it... I don't think carpet makes a difference- I have carpet and around this time, they come out..
I would say, just try it- they are more afraid of us then we think. A mouse created panic within me, but then, after seeing it for the second time, and realising it is a very common problem, I started to relax a bit. I felt very proud when I did cry after I saw one dead in the mouse trap. Still hate them, but at least I can move in my own home. Come September, those flying ones are everywhere for two weeks.
I once crashed one of those with the huge head between my favourite armchair and the floor. The stain is still there. I am not proud but ... they are disgusting!!!!:eek:0 -

Flying mice?! LOL!! I know what you meant, but I just had an image in my head of opening the door and seeing lots of mice flying around the living room :rotfl:Do good deeds and you could raise the curtain, do good deeds and you could really raise your life....0 -
The ones that were in my old flat would definately have moved cups. that's why i used platesMum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

I have a spider phobia too - exacerbated by living in appalling student digs yonks ago, when I fought massive spidahs, cockroaches, slugs and mice on a daily basis! Puke!
My OH is scared stiff too, so he's no bloody good so it's me that has to sort them - I'm definitely going to get a load of conkers in this autumn!
I just also wanted to mention that that thing about how we all eat 8 spidahs in our sleep during our lifetimes is not true though. I read in the Sunday Times that it was an urban myth and I BELIEVE THEM!!!!!!!!
Phew!0 -
words cant describe how much i hate the things, if i get a huge one i cry! i am not looking forward to the day it happens when i'm in on my own. we had one the size of a 50p once and that was bad enough, i rang OH crying my eyes out for moral support (pah - he just laughed!) while i sprayed it with raid, polish and hairspray to make sure it wasnt going anywhere!! the carcass was still in the corner of the room when we moved out, i couldnt bring myself to go near it dead or alive!
i cant get close enough to hoover them up. cruel as it sounds, hairspray is the best thing cos it glues them up and they cant move/cant move as quick. i can recommend the chestnut stuff, i literally coated every single nook/crevice in the new house (even before the furniture got moved in :rotfl:) and we've only had one. and in a old house with nooks and crannies everywhere, i dont think thats bad for 4 weeks, especially as i think it came in on the washing.
on the hoover thing, yes they can crawl back out, if OH is around to hoover them up for me i spray raid into the hoover hose while its running. lots of raid
i have considered hypnosis as i think its a bit out of hand, but i dont know if it would work...Mummy to

Home store and more sell a spray, thats supposed to be a deterrant.
Its made of cloves i think and conkers.
Or get this yrs conkers and leave em all around the house, they hate the smell apparently.
OH doesn't mind them but he even freaked at a massive one outside the other day. Im having to cover its dead body up with the recycling baskets, and it just covers it. U can see the hairs etc all over it.
I hate them, im petrified, unless its a grass spider, the thin ones then i can just about stand them. Why is it that us with the phobia seem to be able to cope with the really thin ones?????0 -
I am absolutely terrified of spiders, really freak out if any are in the house - and daddy long legs are just evil!!! Admittedly, I rarely have to deal with them - their arrival in the house is normally announced by 3 cats going into hunter mode. Not nice, but they never last ong and I rarely see any creepy crawlies despite living in an old house.0

I don't like the thin ones either. In fact I don't even like money spiders.
And those ones with the big round body and very fine legs...:eek:_pale_
However, I am fine with daddy long legs, daft as it may seem! They don't bother me at all!0 -
I was just wondering whether anyone on here has sought treatment or help to overcome their fear? I am not scared of spiders, and reading this I feel so sorry for those who have their lives disrupted by their fear, especially to the extremes people have mentioned on here. I know that 'curing' this kind of phobia can be very succesful and I was wondering whether anyone had tried it? Apart from anything, it must be difficult not to pass something like that on to your kids, which I'm guessing nobody would want to do?
Good luck everyone - I really feel for you all!0
