All last year we were plauged by the big ones, apparently the big ones are the females looking for a mate! Yuck!!! I get them with the hoover too! Sook them up with the hose then leave it running for a while to make sure they're not coming back out!

bestpud I'm like that, its horrible isn't it, I really freak out and have nearly crashed whilst driving when one came down from a web in my car :(
Its totally out of hand. I check everything for spiders, my shoes, my dressing gown in the morning, towels when I get out of the shower, my clothes all get a good shake before I put them on, my bedding at night, my car before i go out, I'm paranoid.
I really hate them! But Id never kill one, not that I could get close enough to anyway, lol.

Worse still, we live in a 200 year old building and we get a few biggies in here. OH woke up with a really huge one walking across his chest he flicked it off, thought he had killed it as it was dead still at the bottom of the bed, he didn't wake me as he knew Id freak out, he went to get a glass to catch it, came back and it was gone!

He later told me and you can only imagine the hystrionics from me :(
I was crying and shaking, everything. I'm such an idiot.

They reckon chestnuts are a good deterrent. Ive just found the plug in things on the net too, so i'll be getting a couple of those methinks :)

sorry if its been suggested as ive not read all the replies but we use a spider spray. one was a chestnut spray the other was a "spider be gone" kind of thing, you spray it around the room and where you think they may come in. It stinks at first but i think it does work. doesnt stop them all but have had a big reduction i nthem. we have the plug in ones which are meant to repell them but i dont think it made a difference. im told putting conkers around the place is meant to work, and MSE as they are free!

Good luck with getting rid of them

Buy this stuff from Wilkos or Robert Dyas, spray it outside over your airbricks, on the brickwork around windows, doors or anywhere else you think they might come in. It dries to a clear lacquer, which the spiders don't like so they avoid it. This worked for me - I used to get dozens coming in the house every autumn, but I don't get any biggies now.

Also, spiders don't like the smell of conkers, I'm sure your kids will be happy to collect them. Store them in net bags (eg onion nets) in the cupboard under the stairs to deter the spiders.

My OH also has a spider phobia- I used to be a bit scared of them but have had to get over it to help him! I'm a fan of the card and glass method, OH just wants to kill them all but it just feels a bit too cruel... not sure what he does when I'm not about- probably best I don't know!

This time of year they do seem to be everywhere- which means it's time for OH's annual speech (I'm serious!). He clears his throat and stands in the hallway (where he can be heard in all rooms) and issues fair warning to all spiders to leave now, and that any caught in the house afterwards will 'face the consequences' :rotfl:

He is getting better- he managed to get a very small one the other night with the card and glass method :T

It may be an old wives tale but I've heard that they don't like conkers? Apparently if you put a few conkers in each corner you won't get any spiders. Not sure how true this is... it might be more to do with the time of year that conkers are available than anything else

Sorry to hear about your troubles bestspud- phobias really are awful.

my sister is even more petrified than me and she had one crawling up her neck once (it was bl00dy massive) and it certainly didn't quash her fears in fact it probably made her even worse!

I have a bit of a spider phobia too,but I really don't like to kill them,I use the ' glass and card ' method to collect them up and then chuck them outside.

I was sitting in bed the other night reading a book and I caught a movement out of the corner of my eye and there on the wall, about 6 inches away from me,was a huuuuge spider  I shrieked and leapt out of bed and grabbed the glass and card, which I have handy at all times :rotfl: and managed to collect it up and put it outside. There was no way I was going to sleep with that thing loose in my bedroom.

The conker thing worked for me last year,I placed them all around my lounge, hall and bedroom and I didn't see any of the big hairy spiders, only a few very tiny ones, which I can cope with.I remember seeing a spray in Savers chemist which contained the smell of horse chestnuts,so that might be an idea for anyone who can't get conkers.
