If you want to live and thrive... Let the spider run alive....

There is a rule in my house, spiders can have the ceiling and the walls and I get the floor and furniture.

https://www.spiritofnature.co.uk/acatalog/5198.html?source=googleadw&camp=Spider+Catcher&kw=spider+catcher is an easy enough trap once you get the hang of it.

I dont mind spiders, as long as they are not on me.

When i was with my ex i was laying in bed reading a magazine and he was across his room on his pc. For some reason i thought i would move the magazine and look at my leg. And there was this massive spider crawling up the cover and onto me!!

I screamed and had to get my ex to come and take it away lol.

I dont like squishing them cause i feel guilty and i dont know what to do with the dead spider lol.

I don't really like spiders but I wouldn't say I'm petrified of them.
Fr*gs on the other hand (sorry I can't even bear to see the word written out) and all other associates I have a completely irrational fear of - does anyone know how to get rid of them from your garden or is there anything you can put down to discourage them. I love gardening but too scared. Dark, wet evening getting into the house from my car are my absolute nightmare and we want to go walking in the evening to get some exercise but I'm petrified cos I know they are out there lurking ...... Any ideas?

On the spider thing though, I thought they could find their way back home from 5 miles away so putting them outside the back door doesn't really help - is that just an old wives tale???

I've usec conkers for 3 years now, seems to work fine!

It's a bit too early yet to collect any nw conkers, so I've bought some chestnut oil spider repellant spray on Ebay see link here:

    http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__spider+spray_W0QQ_dmdZ2?rvr_id=&crlp=2096428058_228459_228460&UA=WXI6&GUID=8952a94411f0a0aad1e46764fef6b334&agid=857869568&MT_ID=10&keyword=spider+spray&ff4=228459_228460

There's a few available, I just get the cheapest which seems to work.

Oh, and my OH is just as terrified of spiders as I am - how daft is that!

Spiders hate citronella oil, I usually mix a few drops in water & spray around my windows. I've been using this method all summer seems to have done the trick.

bestpud I'm like that, its horrible isn't it, I really freak out and have nearly crashed whilst driving when one came down from a web in my car :(
Its totally out of hand. I check everything for spiders, my shoes, my dressing gown in the morning, towels when I get out of the shower, my clothes all get a good shake before I put them on, my bedding at night, my car before i go out, I'm paranoid.
    I really hate them!
But Id never kill one, not that I could get close enough to anyway, lol.

He later told me and you can only imagine the hystrionics from me :(
I was crying and shaking, everything. I'm such an idiot.

They reckon chestnuts are a good deterrent. Ive just found the plug in things on the net too, so i'll be getting a couple of those methinks :)

    That's me!

I had one in the car once, but luckily my friend was with me. I ramed the car into the grass berge and was virtually on top of he rin the passenger seat as it was by my wing mirror, but inside.

She got out and walked round to get it while I shrieked in terror for her to make sure it went outside the car! Goodness only knows what passers by thought!

I won't put gardening stuff in my car at all, unless I myself have triple bagged it, and tied each bag properly. I have taken some stuff to the charity shop today, and as it has been sat in my computer room for a while, I added two extra bags to each one and tied them tightly before I took them anywhere near the car. Then the air form the blower caught one of the bags while it was sat next to me on the passenger seat and I swear I didn't breathe until I got out of the car 5 minutes later!

Buy this stuff from Wilkos or Robert Dyas, spray it outside over your airbricks, on the brickwork around windows, doors or anywhere else you think they might come in. It dries to a clear lacquer, which the spiders don't like so they avoid it. This worked for me - I used to get dozens coming in the house every autumn, but I don't get any biggies now.

This may seem daft, but won't that stop the ones that are already here from getting out?

Always - that is freaky!! Do they really move cups?

Another reason to stick with the hoover!!

And the thought of one loose in my bed!!!:eek::eek: OMG!!

I feel sick that the one I caught earlier was underneath a blanket (dogs) that I had walked past and probably even stood on several times this morning! To think it was that close to my foot!!!:eek::eek:
  • I am totally the same. I don’t like killing them because I know they eat flies etc. If it’s a small one I can do the card/glass thing but I get OH to throw them outside. Anything bigger than that and OH has to deal with it.

We have had quite a few biggies lately, and they always seem to target me lol. Had one the other day when I was sitting on a chair and it darted out between my legs on the floor, a massive one and I refused to go back into the bedroom until it was removed. Over the weekend was sitting on the bed eating some lunch (pasta with tomato sauce) when I spotted a big one crawling slowly near my leg – the tray of food went up in the air, pasta sauce was all over the wall behind me and on the sheets (had just changed them before sitting down as well) and I ran from the room screaming/crying, took all clothes off and jumped in the shower until OH checked my clothes to make sure it wasn’t in there. :o

PS regarding the hoover thing, that is what I used to do back in the day until I saw the same spider crawl out of it! (I had left the hoover in the bedroom as I had just caught one and was too lazy to take it downstairs, was watching TV and saw it crawl out). I also used to rinse any that were in the bathtub down the plug hole until the same thing happened!

We use a spider spray, I got it from Betterware ages ago, I think it’s called Spider Stop, was £3.99 I think and the bottle lasted ages. You have just reminded me that I need to buy some more. When we did use it there was a considerable difference in the amount of spiders coming in.

Sorry bestpud, it seems funny to me, although I am still sympathetic!!

Could you bear using a fishing net (you know the ones you buy for a £1) and popping Harry back outside?

What about sending DD1 and 2 to dad's for catching training, and paying them 20p for a small one, 30p for a medium one and 50p for a whopper!

I've got to say I think this is an excellent suggestion. :T

My partner is really scared of spiders so I tend to clean the areas (dark corners) where they skulk but resort to the hoover too for the really big ones.

I've found having maure tress near your house seems to bring them in. We have a HUGE one that's set up home under the washing machine right next to where my cat has her food bowls.

She seemed really scared of it when she first saw it but the other night we found the remains of a large one after she had a mad half hour tearing through the house to we're hoping it was the one.

God im glad to know that im not the only one!

My BF thinks im completely crazy, soooo scared of spiders mainly, but anything that flies as well, daddy long legs are bad with me, one was in the other night and i was screaming round the bedroom and he was lying on the bed tutting at me and saying 'for gods sake' coz i was ruining his film!!!!! Hello!! I was bright red, couldnt breath and scared to death!!

Spiders though, always been really scared of them, but ever since one huge one crawled up my bare leg when i was younger sat at the computer desk! Hate them anywhere in the room with me, on the ceiling, walls, anywhere, i KNOW when they're there. The bigger they are the worse i get. And if someone doesnt get it out or misses it and its in the room i cant sleep in there, knowing how many you eat during your life time in your sleep _pale_

I hate killing anything, and if there's any other choice i wont, when they are outside i never bother them, but when they make me get close to having panic attacks needs must.
My cousin will pick them up any size and talk to them, my BF tickles them and calls them baby spiders when they are the size of your hand!

i will only try to get them by hoover if i really have to. i dont like it as i think what if i dont get it and it runs down the hoover pipe onto me!

i'll chuck books at them, the other night i was alone in the house and i went down about 3 for the bathroom i usually put every light on to see everything, but i really needed the bathroom so didnt put the bathroom light on until i got in there and i was a inch or closer from standing on the biggest spider! it ran i screamed, it jumped and i grabbed the closest thing - the bleach! i was so scared that i just started squirting it around the floor all over the place and it got the spider! (i know i feel way cruel but i just didnt think and when you're in the middle of fear its really hard) anyway, i got in major trouble the next day, the bathroom mats and everything were ruined and i was coughing all night with the bleach id sniffed in.

i cant put glasses over them coz that involves you getting WAAAY to close to them! i couldnt use a net coz they could get out and run on me, the net totallybroke i think it was, gave the link to looks a bit better as i think you just close it and its in there but its still too scary for me.

i like a breeze coming in and my BF cant sleep with the windows closed. there is that netting stuff that you can get to try and keep them out. havent tried the sprays yet.

and with the hoover trick - yeah they can crawl back out really p*****off at you so i always put a big thick rag or something down the end of the pipe and leave it stood up for a good day or so.

    i hate having irrational phobias.

makes it worse when others laugh and think you're mad just coz they're not scared they think no one should be.

went outside with the torch last night to close the back gate and this hawk-moth came flying at me, god its wings were so big i started squealing and threw the torch at my BF and ran in the house shaking my clothes in case it was clinging on!

See, now I wouldn't mind using that except for one small detail.....

    IT'S SEE THROUGH!!

If I catch a big one in there, I don't want to see it scurrying about in the trap, I just want to transport it at arms length to the window and press release. It's the same with those mini "spider hoovers" you can get, a clear transparent tube! That's even worse, it would look like it's flying towards me.

I lived on my own for a while last year, and having a cat was the best spider deterrent ever. I only seemed to get the ones that look like daddy long legs without the wings, which I can cope with, because I pretend they ARE daddy long legs! But there has been a few occaisions where its back to the trusty vax.

Now I'm living back at home it's bad, my mom and brother aren't scared at all and treat spider catching as a massive inconvenience. When I'm hysterical and shaking I get these classics:

"It's more scared of you than you are of it"

    "It's TINY."

"Oh for heavens sake, grow up"

"Look, there's probably loads in this house and you don't realise"

    Not helping
