Ok, I am seriously freaked out now! Please though, nobody post a picture of a spider!
I am scared witless of spiders and we have now found three massive ones in the last week!!!
I no longer have an OH to get rid of them (although he did come out at 11.30pm the other night to one of them and he caught the second one as he was here at the time) and I am very scared.
DD2 just told me there was another in the hallway and I managed to grab the hoover (I have it permanently ready to go at the moment!) and get rid of it.
DD1 is great with small to medium spiders, but these are HUGE!!!
I've got to clear out my computer room as it is starting to gather 'stuff'.
I am also going to put carpet on the landing and stairs, because I've convinced myself they come up through the cracks in the floorboards!
I'm going to get my ex to take the rest of his tools etc from under the stairs as I want that as clutter free as possible.
Everything else is as clear as I can make it - I have all furniture away from walls so I can get the vacuum cleaner behind it and I will only open windows when I am in the room with the vacuum cleaner ready so I can get any that come in.
But what else can I do?
Has anyone tried those electronic things and if so, do they work? My fear is, if they work, they may stop the spiders that are in the house getting out iyswim?
I've seen people talk about different home made sprays on other websites but I can't go looking too much because people post blimming pictures, which scares the hell out of me as well - I can't look at them at all.
Oh boy, this really isn't funny, although I'm sure it seems that way to people who aren't scared of them!
Is it just me...?

Sorry bestpud, it seems funny to me, although I am still sympathetic!!
Could you bear using a fishing net (you know the ones you buy for a £1) and popping Harry back outside?
What about sending DD1 and 2 to dad's for catching training, and paying them 20p for a small one, 30p for a medium one and 50p for a whopper!0 -
They're coming into mating season, so you may see them running around. I Although they seem like practical measures I don't think they will help much, they can get in through all sorts of ways. It's better if you find some kind of coping mechanism. I quite like the idea of bribing your children with money to deal with them. Might be a good incentive and then hopefully they won't grow up with your phobia.0

I hate them, 100% horrible ick ick ick, buuuut I live along for 5 days a week and HAVE to deal with them, or I would a nervous wreck.
It's too warm to keep windows permanently shut, and lifes to short to be terrified everytime you open a cupboard etc.
I do understand totally how you feel though, it is a phobia, a totally irrational fear that I think maybe only people who have one can totally understand.
Have no advice to offer, just best wishes on getting it resolved.
Good luck2 angels in heaven :A0 -
i hate them too and i lived in a flat once where they took the windows out and left a 3 inch gap underneath the new ones for months, and OMG never seen spiders like the ones that came out of the wall cavity. they were HUGE!
i used to put plates on them and call my mum or my brother or random people from outside to get rid of them for me, but then i have no shame
When i lived with my mum we had a compromise. She did all the spiders and i got rid of all the cat's 'gifts' as she's terrified of mice :TMum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

Spider catching for beginners.
Put a pint glass over the spider and push a piece of card under the glass between the spider and the wall. Return the blasted critter to the garden where it came from.
And if you train your kids like ceebeeby suggests then you'll be spider-free in no time.
I'm not at all keen on spiders, but the sooner they are caught and 'liberated' the easier I feel.
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.
Oi you lot - pleaseGIVE BLOOD
- you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

No no no. a glass would mean i can see the spider, and if i slide card under it i can see it move *shudder*
my friend threw a big spider into a coal fire once, and it went 'pop' ewwww.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

That's what dd1 does normally, but even she is afraid of these beasties! She may be persuaded for money though...
No way could I get that close, and even if I could, I wouldn't be able to use a clear container!
DD2 (she has just read this) says she will only catch them with the vacuum cleaner!
We are clearing the computer room now and I've got three charity shop bags put into a bigger black sack and sealed, as I cannot take them in the car when there may be things lurking!
DD2 is 'helping' and has just been in fits of laughter as I was vacuuming around a box when it caught a bit of the plastic bag inside and frightened me!
Chinkle - are you saying they will be having babies in my house...?:eek::eek:
I know it's daft but I can't help it! I am so scared it's ridiculous!
I once started doing some EMDR with my counsellor, to try and deal with this, but had to stop for another reason - I think I may ask if we can try again!0 -
I am like you and am petrified. They make me cry when im in alone and know no-one is around to get rid so I have taught myself this.
I grab a pint glass and put that over. Leave overnight and they are dead in the morning.
My mum stays next to woods and they are everywhere. No one else in my family is scared, so hense the reason when they moved, I didnt bother.
I think its the knees that scare me and the way there legs move. Even just writing this, I am getting shivers up my spine
Im off to Africa next month. God only knows that it will either cure me or kill me
You do realise, they are still alive when you hoover them up so could easily crawl back out the hoover.
We have one of those plug in things as we were getting really bad with ants and spiders and I can honestly say I think we have had 4 spiders since last year and no ants
Good luck with whatever you do

:rotfl:I don't like spiders either Bestpud and I usually employ the hoover method (although I now have a Dyson and you can see it in the dust collection!)
My OH is Sri Lankan and disposes of them as humanely as possible (it's against his relgion to purposely harm any living creature)
However he doesn't currently live with us and you can imagine my embarrassment recently when a spider was spotted by DS on the bathroom floor and before you could say glass and card my DS had fetched the hoover and DD had sucked the little critter up cheerfully announcing it's departure
I do try the glass and card method but if it's a really big one the hoover is my friend0
