Recommendations anyone???
I'm another phobic (who is way to wimpy to go on the London Zoo course, although it comes highly recommended by a lot of people!). I live near basingstoke, which seems to have it's own population of giant mutant spiders (now if employers and estate agents were forced to mention this, I wouldn't be living here!).
I've had similar electromagnetic & ultrasonic repellers in my house for about 5 years now. They've made a difference, but you do still get some spiders. However, don't switch them on for the first time when you're at home, as they drive everything out of the walls, so you'll see more, not less (but they'll all be legging it for the outside!).
As for hoovering, now I have a dyson I KNOW what happens. They die. Even the big ones. I always leave the hoover running for 5 minutes or so with the tube facing up, and put it (or just the bit with the dirt in) outside until I'm feeling strong enough to empty it.
I guess like all phobias, its about working out strategies that allow you to cope.
Filling holes & cracks does help, as it means they don't have as many places to hide. The same goes for keeping things tidy and uncluttered. And clean. This includes moving the furniture regularly to hoover behind/underneath.
I use a dehumidifier in the winter (unlike a previous poster, I find that they prefer it to be damp). I also use tea-tree oil on my cleaning cloths to wipe woodwork/furniture (careful, it can damage the finish). I have conkers in baskets on the stairs (which have had the gaps on the treads caulked). I have hair-catchers from lakeland in the plugholes to stop anything coming UP the plugholes. All of these may or may not work, but I'd rather not take the risk.
I live alone, so have had to learn to cope. Small ones are caught in a tissue and binned/flushed. Large ones are hoovered/stamped on/squashed with books/shoes/telephone directories (whatever gets it over and done with quickest for both of us). I don't like killing things, but realise that sometimes you have to find a way to deal with it. I do NOT want to go back to being so terrified I start hallucinating and have to leave the house!
This time of year is tough, as there are a lot about, and I find evenings and first thing in the morning particularly worrying. I'm wearing shoes indoors all the time, leaving lights on in the hall/landing, and generally being paranoid.
Maybe I should invite my mum to stay for a month :rotfl::rotfl:Or one of the spider-lovers from this thread could volunteer to come and live in and do the humane removal until the season is over again...0 -
and another phobic here. I was OK til we moved out to Sri Lanka as a child and I met a 4" bird eating spider in the loo one night
The phobia was reinforced back in the UK when I slipped a bare foot into my shoe and there was a large spider hiding there. Did you know they go pop when you squash them? I am sure the scream must have been heard miles away and I had my foot under the shower for at least 10 minutes:o0 -
We have had a visitor every night this week, each time about 10pm running across my white carpet, its not the same one either. I totally freaked me out.
have made plans to be 'out' tomorrow night!
My son had a tarantula as a pet couple of years ago and I didnt mind that, it was big and furry and a browny colour like a rabbit, and more importantly it didnt move much, I even held it. I did sh*t myself once tho when my son put a shedded skin on me! He had to go in end up as the crickets kept us awake whilst awaiting their deaths.
Its the ones that run fast and are black, the darker colour they are the louder the screaming.
some of the ideas here are interesting - when is it conker time?0 -

I'll be buying one of those then. Thanks for the tip about not being in when we switch it on - I would have freaked if they'd come out in their hundreds heading for the door :rotfl:I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

This is just disgusting........it's a wonder you didn't pack his case and make him leave home. Perhaps it was DS you meant at the end there - "He had to go in end up" :rotfl::rotfl:I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
I have to say that just this year there has been a huge increase in those daddy long leg spiders and a decrease of those big fat house spiders. Ive seriously had loads of daddy long legs this year bouncing around in their webs - does anyone know why the increase in these at all? Ive heard loads of people mention they have alot of DLL's in there houses too??
I too like the spidercatcher - may invest in one of them.
I can deal with catching them in the hoover - hate them high on the wall though as i get worried I may mis-aim and it will drop off the wall and then I cant find the critter.0 -

I hate them being high up too - on lampshades is worst!
I don't mind daddy long legs at all.
My dog caught and half ate one in the hallway Thursday morning (another biggie). I didn't realise what he was doing to start with and then didn't know whether to try and get him to take it outside or what!
I hate spiders bodies as much as I hate live ones so I was on a bit of a tizz, but managed to hoover it up without really looking at it. I was reassured when I realised it could not possibly be alive as it was a bit spread out!
He received plenty of praise!0
