I think those courses are helpful to a point, as I believe they go into the origins of phobias, why certain creatures/insects affect some people the way they do, suggest coping mechanisms etc.
I think that they start small, showing pictures of spiders etc and try to build in a feeling of calm, so that you associate peaceful feelings with seeing spiders in increasing sizes, until you can manage to hold a tarantula ... something I'm sure that most people would never dream they would be able to do at the beginning of the day.
I'm with you though .... its the fast moving brown monsters I need to be able to cope with. Don't need to ever hold one happily .... just be able to leave it be, and not have a panic attack would do me fine.0 -
I doubt I could ever hold one - I have to kill it - i cant cope with it being in my house ready to crawl back out and over me when Im sleeping
Ive moved some big a$$ pieces of furniture over the years to catch one which has outrun me.
Its me or him .....and its usually him.0 -

I thought it was just me that had thoughts of spiders crawling over me whilst asleep!0 -
I like spiders!!!I think they are very clever, and their webs are really beautiful especially when the raindrops catch on them.......I love to liberate them, and can happily pick them up and free them outside.
Ooooh, come and live here poet, pleeeeease! You can have your own room....

No, I do too!
I had one drop on my back when I was sleeping once, and I swear it felt like a mouse dropping from the ceiling - it was really heavy!! :eek:0 -
Ive always worried about them in my bed since I found one under my pillow many years ago - I ALWAYS ALWAYS check my bed EVERY night before I get into it - its just become a habit.
I like brown - I have brown soft furnishings all over my house - my settee is brown leather - I have brown & cream in my bedroom - so the little critters can disguise themselves on my quilt covers and chairs.
Im not scared to kill them though
sometimes when they are in awkward places like high on a wall in the corner - it takes a while to strategize the best kill procedure. :idea:0 -
Being South African, spiders are good critters that eat mozzies and flies and basically rid your home of pesky bugs (which are unavoidable in Africa!) but I was never afraid of them UNTIL I came to the UK! Occasionally we got wall spiders which could grow to the size of your palm incl fingers but were totally flat and still I wasn't scared.... Flippin hell ... English Spiders are fekking huge and nasty looking!
I remember once my now husband came to stay over at my house which I shared with my mother. Mom is petrified of spiders. Anyhoo we were just cannoodling in the bedroom and we hear a shriek coming from the passage. My husband jumped up (naked) and ran to the hallway. There he found my mother curled into a little ball sobbing like a baby! he couldn't move he was laughing at her so much! Above her was a tiny little spider on a thread of web and it had dropped down just in front of her as she was walking to her bedroom! My husband nipped off the web and took spidy outside!
I'll never forget asking her in the morning if she was scared of seeing my husband naked or if it was only the spider? She can't remember my husband ever being naked! LOL0 -
Saw one last night on the kitchen floor, quite a large one. A quick whack with the broom and he was toast!!!

I was really brave yesterday as I decided to trap the (biggish) spider under the glass and got a piece of cardboard ready to throw it out of the patio door .... my plan went terribly awry when - going to flick the door lock upwards to release the catch - a flippin big green grasshopper was perched on it!!!   Thankfully the OH answered my call of assistance and got rid of both creepies for me!0
