The midwife on the GMTV debate the other day said that the boiled water needs to be 70 degrees to kill any bacteria in the formula. Thinking about it I suppose that's more for the newborns  That was one of the things they said mums weren't told in hospital.
That's why I thought it was odd... It would make more sense to me if the nursery just boiled the kettle and made up the milk themselves as and when. But one of the others we visited wanted you to bring in your own water too... very odd.

My MW advised the same when I asked her, to put store the cooled boiled water in the fridge but to make up the formula as needed, but the formula would never be heated up to 70 degrees to kill the bacteria

I go against the advise and make up 3/4 feeds, store in the fridge and heat as needed. This is the way I knew before I researched the recommended method and it's the way my Mum did it and my older sis for her 3. At least the formula is in contact with the water hot enough to kill the bugs and then stored in a sterile bottle in the fridge until needed. Seems to make more sense to me, and I know I'm going against what "they" say, but I've weighed up all the options and that seems best for me.

    Morning all :)

well, after sleeping through from 8 1/2 weeks (don't shoot me!) we were up at 10, 11, 1.30, 3 5.30 and up for good at 6.10.

Surely this is something to do with imminent weaning?!

    Please?!

I am new on this thread, i have been happily wandering around the forums until i feel the need to offer my opinion, view, advice etc....

I am sitting here with a smile on my face, as i know those early wakeups only too well. My son slept through until he was 5 months, he never slept through the night again until about 4-5 months ago, he is 3 in september. Im sure your little one wont be the same, but just be prepared. In the end i found that i felt more alert when i had woken up through the night, if i slept through i was so grumpy and tired. Some nights i would be in there 4,5,6 times, it was tough but i knew it would stop one day.

MotM - I'd tell her that the old way of doing it was always 1/3 on bills, 1/3 to save and 1/3 to spend :)
So if you wanted to be "fair" I guess 1/2 and 1/2? 1/2 for her to spend and 1/2 to you for bills (secretly saved for her for a deposit on a house/flat or something later on?)

    Hi NMS

I do the same - there are some Department of Health guidelines on the preparation of formula, and this is what it recommends 'when it's not practical to make up one feed at a time'. I make up 3 in the morning, then 2 for the evening, then last thing at night I make the first feed one (for 6am). This way they are never more than about 8 hours old max. The guidelines are around somewhere.

Like you, I know the water is hot enough when used to kill the bacteria and then they are kept cold in my fridge. When my daughter starts nursery in Janaury I'll make her bottles first thing for the day there, or perhaps use cartons, I wouldn't supply them with the cooled water and powder as this seems to defeat the object!
