    I've been Money Tipped!
:oWell, honestly, I am someone who is fairly frequently in heir garden undressed.:o We have ade some effort with planting to try and ensure that this doesn't impact on our neighbours who, in anycase, are not ''immeadiate'' neighbours. Personally speaking I would be saddened if this embarrassed or offended anyone, but then, I think to a degree, learning to live with the differences people have is part of being neighbours. e.g. some peoplenearish us have a teenage son who has had three all night parties this summer. Three all night parties we can live with, every weekends we couldn't, but thats not to say I don't find it annoying. I also really hate the colour of another persons weatherbording....so I just try really hard not to notice it: it makes them happy.

I think that the best solution would be to look at fencing or planting. Things that grow rapidly and densely: clumping bamboos, trelis with climbing roses/honeysuckles, green willow stakes- whatever: there are hundreds of planting options. :) The idea of a movable hurdle till then is a great idea.

I hope your father finds someway to enjoy his garden again. Good luck :)
  • I don't think sunbathing topless is a problem in a secluded garden and I have no issues with nudity (having just done a naked charity fundraise!)
Surely it's manners though - I wouldn't expose my boobs to someone who didn't want to see them. My garden has a low fence and runs alongside the pavement and I would never dream of sunbathing topless in there, let alone wandering about. It sounds like she gets a bit of a kick out of it. I would put some trellis up and some tall plants/flowers. If I did go topless in my garden, I would be subject to streams of abuse/comments from passing public. What is the law on it anyway - I did another naked promotion where we had aprons on covering out front, you could see some boob and our bum, and we got reported to the police for indecency :-)

  • I don't really have any advice but would like to point out that if you do talk to this woman and it becomes an argument, when you come to sell your house, you have to mention in the new HIPs whether you've ever had a dispute with your neighbours.

But when he declares what the dispute is about it'll double the price of the house!!! :p
  • Has he thought about doing a few Charity open garden days? He'd make a mint, maybe he could volunteer her for some too.........

Does he have any friends who might like to come round for a beer or cup of tea and a peek the next hot day? Should put the silly woman off. It sounds like she is doing it to be offensive, but she will make herself ill - hypothermia- if she does it too often, so it shouldn't really be a problem. Do you know any less gentlemenly men who might stand around in a group saying put 'em away love, we've all seen enough? The forecast is good for September...

You could ask on freecycle for some trellis or fencing :)

  • Am I the only person who thinks that a garden that is overlooked is not the place for topless sunbathing or strolling? I wouldn't want to see topless neighbours (if I had neighbours), female OR male, and I'm 40, female and not prudish, I just think that there's a place for it and that's the beach.

I really can understand why OP's dad feels uncomfortable - he could avoid the beach if he feels uncomfortable with seeing semi-undressed women, but he should be able to enjoy his own garden. The onus should be on the neighbour, if she wants to go topless, to minimise the chance of being overlooked.

Why not remind your dad he fought in WW2 so people have the right to take their tops off in their own garden if they choose to.
I don't think that the nazis were trying to stop people topless sunbathing!

Freedom comes with responsibility to others and it's not unreasonable to have consideration for an old man who isn't used to naked women saying hi to him while he's tending to his leeks!

I don't see any reason for a woman to have to cover up in her own garden, but neither do I see any reason why she can't be considerate of her neighbour's embarrassment.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
