Dad upset at topless neighbour

Options
Well the title says it all really. My dad has a 200 foot back garden which is his pride and joy. He spends most of the day out there working.

His neighbour moved there last year and had a 6ft fence erected between the gardens but only for the first 100 ft. The rest of it just has a low metal fence.

The end bit of the garden is my dad's veg plot and that is where he spends most of his day.

The neighbour has taken to sunbathing topless in her garden (she is about mid 30's). Even when she was laying on the grass I think my dad felt a bit embarrassed about it and tried not to look that way but now she is walking up and down the length of the garden back and forth to her shed and greenhouse.

Yesterday my dad was working away and did not realise she was walking down. As he looked up she was level with him and although she said "hello" he could not manage to speak.

Last night he was upset and said he could not work in his garden if she was going to carry on as she has been as he is just embarrassed.

I know there is nothing wrong with the human body but it does seem out of order that she is doing this. I know my dad should just speak to her but he won't. I don't really want to get involved as I hate confrontation and I know she has a bit of a reputation of being mouthy.

What do you think my dad should do? Also is not actually against the law to be doing that?

Where does he live? Does he fancy selling the house? :P

No real advice. But imagine it could be uncomfortable!
  • Could you have a quite word with her? Just say he's of a different generation and seeing her knockers is putting him off his clematis?

    Hi

Not really sure what to suggest really, other than speaking to the women, not sure what else you could do!
I can imagine it would be uncomfortable, but surely she can't be doing it that often? The weather isn't really topless sunbathing weather at the moment! Also i don't think what she is doing is illegal, aslong as she is in her garden, she's not actually doing anything wrong!

  • Maybe he could plant some quick growing vine by the fence? Or just grow a nice, tall hedge?

The books are sitting just there on the floor.
  • Either (a) she fancies your dad and this is her subtle way of letting him know, (b) she is trying to get your Dad to pay for a fence for the other 100ft of garden, or (c) she is just a weirdo who enjoys making people feel uncomfortable.

He should either put a fence up himself around the bit of garden he mainly uses or just sit it out for a little while. Let's face it, there are very few days in the year when it is possible to sunbathe at all, let alone topless. Hopefully the problem will sort itself out in a week or two.

Sadly it's not against the law. There have been many cases like this before that have actually gone to court, but each time the topless sunbather was cleared, in that they are not exposing themselves to cause offense/harm, but are allowed to sunbath - even completely in the nude in their own private garden.
So law wise, you'd need to show your neighbor is purposefully intending to cause offense.

Perhaps have a quiet word in the first instance, she's may well be totally understanding.

could you imagine her reaction if he did his gardening with his tackle on display for all to see she would be calling the police and complainng about indecent exposure .
i would have a word with her and suggest if she wishes to sunbathe topless then she pays to get the fence heightened

Why "sadly"? People can be topless in their own garden if they like - it's perfectly natural. I have to put up with my neighbour's scrawny chest if I happen to look out of my window and he's in his garden. Why is it OK for men and not for women?
